Do you do it yourself or bring it to a vet?
If you can't laugh at yourself, give me a call. I'll gladly laugh at you. "I keep trying to see Nancy Pelosi's and Chuck Schumer's point of view, but I can't seem to get my head that far up my [censored]." Senator John Kennedy, Louisiana

As a small kid my parents said they took him to the vet to be put down. I always assumed they did, but I really do not know. I know one of my little cousins had a dog that "went to the vet" to be put down... I helped dig the hole to burry it so...
I have put one down myself.

Vet. I cry. I held her as she slipped away and told her that there would be a covey under every bush.

Because it's not too far away, we took our last pet the Vet Hospital at Texas A&M and gave permission to use the remains in student labs. We're expecting to do the same with our dog that's now 17. Found out our cat of 18 years died of brain cancer. Cost is cheaper than the vets too.

Thought this was a Biden thread.
Either way. I suggest a vet.

Take it to the vet but hold it and let your touch be the last thing it feels. Don't let it go surrounded by strangers.

I'll take ours to the vet when it comes time. And to add to this.......We have a 1/2 Great Pyrenees and 1/2 German Shepard. She's huge, about 150 lbs. Before I dig a hole that big and deep here at home I'll take her to Rockwall for cremation. I've learned that it is under $200 for this big dog. I figure it's worth that to me.

I don't think it's wrong, but I couldn't do it myself. had a friend try to put down his horse with a .45 to the head. it knocked it down, but took 2 more shots to get it done.

I've done both. Won't ever put one down with my own hand again unless circumstances force it. That one really ate me up after, but it was the right thing to do at the time. No reason to let an animal suffer.

The vet 100%
I'm dreading the day we have to put the cat down. He has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. We've had him for 15 years or so. When the day comes it will be a sad tough day for the wife. Good luck with your decision.

Do you do it yourself or bring it to a vet? Take it to a vet and put the dog down peacefully.

My vet has always made this tough situation a bit easier and I'm thankful.

Not a dog, but when our cat's time was up, we had a vet come to the house. 100% of the vet's business is making house calls to put pets down.
Our cat always hated the trip to the vet and i couldn't put her thru the trauma just to end her life. Having the vet come to the house was worth every penny!

I would recommend finding a vet that will come to your house. Many dogs get nervous at the vet. Having the vet come to your house allows for a stress free event for the dog. I have done my last 2 in this way.

We're sitting at a vet specialty clinic right now with our 8-yr.-old lab in the back. Just left a regular vet and she said something neurological, and unique, wouldn't you know. Friday she started stumbling with her back legs and now she can't stand at all. I've never seen anything progress this quick. We just have to know if there's any chance at recovery before we make that sad decision. This is her, just a few weeks ago with armadillo blood, mud, and slober all over her, happy as a clam - ![[Linked Image]](https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/pics/userpics/2021/08/full-40213-307220-img_20210823_120522.jpg)

This is her, just a few weeks ago with armadillo blood, mud, and slober all over her, happy as a clam - Get a referral to A&M. About 5 years ago our 3 year old lab had something similar. Within a 48 hour period went from good to effectively paralyzed. A&M will get her the best shot - ours was classed as a rare case and we got a little bit of a discount. It wasn't cheap. They never had a definitive diagnosis - but he recovered with treatment. They were leaning towards myasthenia gravis and treated it as such. I personally think he chewed on a dead toad and got some neurotoxin. Doubt we ever know for sure. We don't have a tick problem - but if you do could even be tick bite paralysis.

I'm no vet, but I've regretted listening to the vet at times and wish I had gone with my own instincts. Just weigh what the vets/specialist tell you with your own knowledge of your dog and go from there. No one knows your dog better than you do. Good luck to you.

tough call ... I've had to do it myself several times, very difficult to do. If given the opportunity, I would take to the vet.
