Rifle I’m having built is almost done. Can’t make up my mind of the scope. It’s either a VX-6HD 4-24 with firedot reticle or an NX8 4-32 second focal plane with the Mil-CF2D reticle. I just don’t know how that busy reticle is going to be for hunting. For a shot at an animal under a feeder isn’t what I’m talking about. I’m talking about one of those shots where you have a few seconds to decide to shoot and take the shot. If they would offer the same reticle from the NXS in the NX8 I’d have already ordered it.
Anybody hunt with the NX8?

I don't have an NX8 but the MIL-CF2D is not a busy reticle. You are still using crosshairs.

Go FFP
It would suck to have to use 32X for your reticle to be correct. Night Force over Leupold every time.
Keep it set on 4X, get your quarry in the scope, turn up magnification until you like it. Hold, shoot.

Floating "dot" in the NX8 is perfect for hunting or any type of shooting. Of course mine is MOA/MOA but may change to FFP/MOA on my next NF.

I recently got the nx8 in that power range for hunting and target shooting. It’s 2nd focal plane. I like that it has markings for 16x and 32x. I doubt I will do much hunting with the power on 32 but I can set it at 16 and have markings to hold if needed. I was worried the reticle would be to small if I went with ffp

I do not own an SFP scope.
Bushnell ERS 3.5-21X (G-2) SS 5-20X (Mil Quad) NF ATACR 5-25X (Mil-C) NF ATACR 7-35X (Mil-C) Burris XTR II 3-15X (Mil dot)
All but the ATACR 7-35X have hunted. Coyotes, hogs, whitetail, mule deer, elk, prairie dogs, Axis, Pronghorn. 10 yards to 700 yards.
The best low light story I have was coyotes, first legal light. Maybe two minutes into legal light while whitetail doe hunting. Coyotes in the wheat field I was hunting. Lasered them at 200. Brought the rifle to my eye, set at 3.5X, turned it up until I liked it. Held .5 Mil on coyote lungs, squeezed, coyote fell over. Then looked at my magnification ring to see where I stopped. 8X is where I stopped. No thinking, no chart reference, just turn up magnification, hold, shoot.
FFP works great for me, for everything I do. Maybe it takes some getting used to, and I did over ten years ago. Now, there is only two magnification ranges I would own that are SFP. 2-10X or 3-9X. If the top end goes past 10X, I want FFP.

I tried FFP on a PST for a while. ( Yes Vortex sucks) I just can't do it on a hunting rifle and I really wanted to make myself like it. I predator hunt a good bit and too much happens too fast at oftentimes close range, and keeping it on low power makes that reticle too small. I get why the long range guys like it though.

My eyes are still good at 51; the only rifle I'm not running FFP on is the 6.8 and it's range-limited for deer.

I predator hunt a good bit and too much happens too fast at oftentimes close range The reason things happen fast is why I like it. If you've got your holds memorized shots can happen so fast, bystanders wonder what the hell just happened. The coyotes don't though, cuz they dead. Turn it up to 6x, or 8x, or whatever suits you. Both eyes open, get reticle on the quarry, go from there.

I have one FFP...I'll pull it soon and put a SFP on that rifle. I really wish Vortex would start getting some Razor LHT in MOA because I'm running out of patience.

I have an NX8 4-32 Mil FFP for hunting. I like everything about it except the sensitive focus range. I constantly have to fiddle with the parallax adjustment because objects barely outside the focus range are blurry as hell. Everything else about the scope is top-notch.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

Keep it set on 4X, get your quarry in the scope, turn up magnification until you like it. Hold, shoot. I don't have an NX8, however, I agree on the FFP. I just recently bought into the FFP/MIL thought process, but after shooting and hunting with both SFP and FFP, I'm convinced on the FFP scopes. If you are shooting a standard duplex reticle, then SFP is fine. If there are any BDC, MIL or MOA hash marks, then SFP makes those marks not only useless, but a hindrance, IMO. Here's what I mean. If you are lining up a shot on a deer, pig, elk, or whatever. You select the 3 MIL hash mark based on the distance, and pull the trigger....but wait, you forgot to change the zoom to max zoom, and now you just shot 6MIL over the back of your quarry. With FFP, that worry is eliminated.

^^Yup
SFP is for 100 yard feeder hunters. That dang sure isn't predator hunting.

Without a doubt the dumbest thing I've ever heard you type JG.
That would be the equivalent of me saying everyone that owns a FFP is an internet operator...we know that isn't the case.

Not ever one time have you stood beside me and had me call out target for you to hit, making holds only.
Call out a target, you have 5 seconds, go!
I know which scope type works better in that situation. Which is as close as I can get to training for a quick hunting shot.

That's not very busy to me. Looks like crosshairs. I bet I could shoot just as fast with that as a duplex.

I have had both sfp and ffp. That nx8 with the 16 or 32 options is perfect for a hunter and I want one. I just recently did the looking research on them. FFP sucks at first and last light and if you don’t have illumination ( I have it) as a hunter. If you do any red light hunting ffp sucks again. And I actually had this guy named Judd call out a yardage and had to let it rip under 5 seconds on a scared axis using a crappy vortex sfp scope at 292 yards

I have the NX8 4-32. It is a wonderful all around scope. I have both FFP and SFP Nightforces, but use the SFP most of the time for hunting. FFP are awful on low magnification, which where I hunt is used more than the top end. I prefer dialing rather than using holdovers when corrections are needed, so it’s no big deal to me either way as long as I can see the reticle clearly. If I am using FFP fine, but on low power they are harder to see to me. Zero stops and illumination are must haves, but reliability is the single most important performance factor in any scope. When a big deer is standing there, warranties are meaningless, equipment working correctly right then and there is everything. It makes me sad to say, but Leupold is living on a reputation it no longer deserves. Any Nightforce from the NXS line or better will be more reliable than any Leupold. 50 Leupold users will chime in saying they have no problem. BTDT. Use a Leupold and it will break, the only question is when. Reticles are very subjective, pick the one you like. The MOAR is easy to see and use in field conditions to my eye. Hard to understand why they do not make the exact same design with mil sized units. If you shoot in night or very low light, pay attention to how much of the reticle lights up, less is better. The IHR is excellent in very low light as only the center lights up. For hunting, the NXS Compact 2.5-10x42 is a very handy and reliable scope that also merits consideration.

Thanks Jeff. What scope is your NF that you hunt with? Unfortunately the best option I can find in the NX8 SFP is that Mil I showed the picture of. The similar MOA one has dots that light up along the windage and vertical axis. I handled it at Scheels and it’s too much. Predator hunting at night I want one lighted dot.

Since your budget appears to be there and you mentioned Leupold have you considered the Mark 5 HD 5-25? It’s FFP with a variety of reticles. I got the illuminated PR-1 MIL. The non illuminated is $1999. I haven’t had much time behind it but I’d say the glass is easily as good as the VX-5HD or 6HD. Some say better but my eyes only get so good. It does have a center for that I like.

One draw back to the Mk 5 is the 35mm tube. I had hell finding rings available.
