With several topics coming up about food plots recently it got me to wondering when everyone starts getting their ground prepped and what you do to get ready for them if you havn’t already, how big your going and what your planting this year? Deer season will be upon us before you know it thank goodness. If anyone up in my area needs any help I’ll be happy to help out as my time allows

I plant a 40 acre and a 10 acre wheat field every year the beginning of October for the deer. Once deer season in over I open the gates and let my cows graze it. I plant in October due to army worms, they've been bad out here the past couple of years and planting in October seems to help. 90# of wheat and 90# of fertilizer per acre.

I am going to plant more rocks since that is all I got now since I sold my place in Goliad County. I may overseed a couple of areas with rye grass and turnips though to see what results I get. Try to time the fall rains and see what happens.

I’d much rather be down thr with you but we have to much stuff here going on to up and move, maybe one day before I die I’ll finally make it to the rocks of the hilly place lol I’m leaving about 50 acres of corn and beans standing and I’ll plant about 30 acres of other green goodies mostly in plots inside the timber. I plowed most of ours up a couple weeks ago and added more lime but I typically drill the seeds around the second week of September.

Mine are almost solid grassburrs this summer. I used roundup 2 weeks ago on them. It is too late to put down a pre-emergent this year and still plant a food plot, so I will plant wheat and turnips and later spray msma when the burrs comeback this fall. I will hit them in early March with a good pre-emergent to knock them back.

I've always been partial to oats over winter wheat for deer plots in the fall/winter.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I hunt NE TX close to Shreveport. About 30 acres surrounded by heavy hunting pressure. My property is pine thickets and heavy thick brush. I have a pop up blind sitting on a pipeline. I have a tractor and brush hog but no disc so I don't usually plant any food plots. I just have 2 corn feeders that I run with plain ol corn. However, I was told I can mow the weeds down and spread rye grass seed and maybe oats and it will grow as long as it gets rain. Has anyone else done this?

I’m going back to triticale this year. It took well in my pens and the deer have eaten the top off of every shoot.

Hit it just before the rain in late September or the first week of October. Fertilizer will help but not as crucial.

Also Austrian winter peas are a good attractant and do well.

The Ryegrass will come up good and look purty, but may not attract much. IMO, you'll waste about 90% of just about any other seed if you don't at least disturb the soil a bit. do you have a heavy chain, that you can unhook and then 'drag' your brush-hog (or large log, or something heavy) behind tractor, to rip the soil up a bit ?? I don't have a disk or plow either, but just use a box-blade, with the rippers lowered down couple inches below grade - works great.

I've had good luck with Austrian winter peas and trophy daikon radishes.

Last weekend I scratched in some (feed) oats in a little back plot I cleared out last winter. I used box-blade rippers to break the soil, and then scratch the seed in an inch or two deep after broadcasting with a walk-behind lawn seed/fertilizer thrower. Was surprised to see it coming up already, even without rain or watering - inch high seedlings 1 week later! This spot doesn't 'dry out' as fast as areas 'uphill', but it doesn't flood either - nice sandy loam soil. Picking up a couple hundred pounds of seed from JustinSeed this week for my larger areas, to go down in the next couple of weeks, before some rain (austrian peas, clovers, wheat, cereal-rye).

I plowed my fields a couple weeks ago. I will disc again, fertilize 200 lbs to the acre, and drag. Then drill in a mixture of oats and wheat. I just plant about 12 acres. Like to putty seed in about mid September.

We got our ground prepped this weekend. 4 smaller plots totaling about 6 acres. Limed at 400lbs per acre, and then got a nice little rain yesterday evening. Will plant a mix of peas, oats, wheat, and clover in a couple of weeks. When it gets up about 3-4" tall we'll hit it with triple 13 about 300lbs per acre.

I plant in northern Texas and southern Oklahoma (Lake Ray Roberts area to Ardmore, Ok area).
August week 1- brushog all the plots August week 3- spray plots with roundup and liberty September week 1- disc plot (spring tooth plow if dry), spread seed/fertilizer and then cover with my disc/drag
This year I planted 25lbs wheat, 25lbs oats and 25lbs winter peas per acre. I also hand spreaded a mix of beets, brassicas, radishes, turnips and other greens after planting. About 5lbs per 2 acres

I’ve got 2-3 acres of Rye grass going in tomorrow
We’ll how it goes, to my knowledge nobody within a few miles plants wheat anymore.
Could be a honey hole, I hope anyway
