Wanting to get our property mowed soon. We have some really tall weeds. The guy that will mow mentioned he was worried about fawns hiding in the grass. What’s everyone’s thoughts? I have seen quite a few pics of fawns walking around with their mom. So I was thinking it would probably be safe to mow now.

Some are born a little later. Makes me nervous and I watch real close. I also only mow what absolutely needs it, mainly just roads where I can see pretty good. I'll feel a little better about mowing in a couple of more weeks. The little suckers won't move, and they're small and hard to see. I'd wait a couple of weeks if you can, most fawns are big enough now that they'll run, but there can still be a few really small ones.

Early to later into August would be better IMO.

Agree with this. Most fawns in my area are up and following Mama....but we always have some late ones.

And I can tell you....nothing is more regrettable to me than running over a fawn, the mowing can wait a bit.

This year, in the last week, I’ve had 3 tiny fawns leap out of the tall grass and run for safety. Haven’t mowed one in the 12 years or more on this place. Been close a couple of times in past years.

Spooked a pair of twins yesterday while mowing. Would say no more than a week old

I have seen a fawn ran over and killed with a bull dozer before. At a certain age they won’t move no matter how slow you are going. I mowed for a few hours at the ranch yesterday. Thick and nasty stuff with a heavy duty cutter on the front of a tracked skid steer. All I hit was a giant rat. I saw blood and guts go flying out the front.

They get killed with hay cutters all the time.

We killed them with some regularity; it was always disheartening but if momma hides them in 8' tall Sudan what can you do.

I would wait if you can, I ran over 2 fawns this weekend and it sucks. It happens all the time especially this year with all the rain allowing the grass to grow taller than normal before it could be cut. Those pretty little things will hold tight and not move until they get chopped all to crap.

I always wait until after July to shred.
We mow our hay fields before that but haven’t hit any.
I’m hearing of fawns coming later this year.

I almost ran over one this weekend in my truck on a road that was overgrown. Just got real lucky I was a bit to the right. I'd wait. Won't be long till they are up and about and not laid up hiding.

Havnt had any run-ins with the hay cutter. It is offset to the right side, so it is easy to watch.

Yep. Still too early I think. Unless you had someone on a 4 wheeler clearing your path, I would wait.

agree, I usually wait until into August ... I have chopped up several with a shredder years ago not thinking about it.
