Howdy and hello first off. New in here and fairly new to bow hunting and just as soon as I got comfortable with my setup, I heard about high FOC arrows and I have started down that rabbit hole.
Anyone else?
I have a newer Cruzer G2 Bear setup from Bass pro. I was shooting a 400 spine with a 75 grain tip.

what bow poundage are you shooting and approx. what speed?

75 grain tip is a little light, most people use a 100 grain head.

I use a 100 grain broad head and have 20 grain inserts up front with a 12 grain collar. I don't want a arrow thats really heavy up front, just don't want it dragging on the tail.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I shoot some that are pretty heavy on FOC 125gr head with a 75gr insert, nocternal lighted noc which offsets the FOC just a little.

I am an avid bowhunter/shooter for 35 years and I've tried all the trends, ideas and anecdotes that have come along. I will preface with saying there is proven consistency in the FOC camp. The results of studies and tests have been pretty repeatable. With that said, is it necessary?

I have sent a lot of 385 grain arrows through whitetail deer from a 35# recurve. So it they are getting full penetration, what is "more" penetration going to do? Well, it is going to make the arrow harder to find and stick it further into the dirt. My teenager was shooting a Bear Cruzer like yours for years. He started at 38#, went to 43# in just one year and was at 49# the last season he used that bow. I didn't go with the words and numbers on the packaging. I spent a lot of time with him shooting to get what worked best. He used a 500 Spine with a 25 grain insert and 100 grain head, three 3-inch feathers. These arrows gave perfect flight on paper out to 40-yards (the furthest range tested). Accuracy was excellent. They weighed 434 grains. 6 whitetail, 2 goats, 2 hogs and a blackbuck were taken, each with one arrow that passed through - most at 20 yards but 2 were at 30 yards.

My compound bow is set at 50# and my DL is 28 even. I used tuned arrows that are 400 spine, 28.5", 12 grain insert and 100 grain head for 440 total. My hunting set-up puts the animal at 30-yards. I had about 80% pass through and some stuck in. I switched to skinnier arrows (Axis) and a better cutting blade (Sonic - American Broadhead Co.) and have had pass-throughs ever since.

Even with my preferred Longbows, I tend to shoot about 10 grains per pound draw weight, but I am FOC. I use a 110 grain brass insert with a 150 grain head and a total weight of 550 grains (in the #49 and #52 longbow). Even with the slow speed of under 150 FPS I am getting consistent pass-through at 20-yards, my max range I will shoot game with them.

We'd need more information about your DW, DL and set-up to give good advice on what could be a "better arrow", but for now I would try for accuracy and maybe a narrow cut-on-contact 100 grain broadhead.

Good luck!

Thank you for the comments.

I spent some time off from work on Friday at the bow range with the pro staff. Got it paper tuned and everything went well.

Draw weight is right under 60 lbs. Draw Length is 26".

I practiced with and was very consistent with carbon arrows gold tip 340 spine, 125 tips. So I plan on sticking with this setup, until the bow bug really bites and I change everything, lol.

I also tested a couple of newer and very nice compound bows, wow, the back wall or stop is so much nicer than my budget bow, haha!

Think of FOC in regards to a chain! Ever tried to push a chain? After you release the arrow if there is too much weight behind the point the tip with flex and easier to divert or deflect. Arrow will flex regardless of FOC just heavy weight up front pulls the length straighter after a distance at cost of speed.

I'm shooting a small diameter arrow with 60gn stainless outserts. They penetrate so much better now.

Your traditional setup is almost the identical to mine.

I've shot both high, extreme and extremely extreme FOC,

My testing shows arrow weight having more impact them FOC. 72lb hard cam bow (Xpedition) With that said we over think things and there is a diminishing point of return, also no magic pill that's going to blow through the lower part of an elk scapula.

I cheap way to play with FOC is kudu point has brass point adapters. Just remember high FOC changes spin quick

I agree that arrow weight is probably more important than FOC. As long as the weight isn't all in the back. I shoot 406 grain for competition and 513 for hunting. I do have some high FOC 740 grain arrows that are very efficient out of my bow. They are more like a lob shot though. But still accurate to 40 yards. After that I worry about overhead obstructions. Any arrow with an ultra sharp broadhead, with an accurately placed shot, out of a reasonable poundage bow will pass through an animal if it doesn't move. It's when they move or jump that a heavier arrow may make the difference between a wounded animal and a dead animal.

There are two recently posted you tube videos on the Hunting Public with the Ranch Fairy that goes over arrow ballistics. They have an actual rocket (ballistics) scientist discuss arrow flight, penetration, kinetic energy and momentum. They do radar tests of arrow speed at the bow and downrange. Excellent information in my view.

Check out the meateater episode #284. Archers Paradox. Lost of good info on that one on FOC, arrow penetration, and broadhead efficiency.

We have had some fun with bows over the years! Many fun hunts and miles thrown in over the years!
