That looks like Brown Patch fungus----if you don't spray it soon, it'll be all over by fall. HD & Lowe's both have the proper chemical to knock it out and it wont hurt anything else. Comes in a hose end bottle and works well.

When I had grubs eating roots at our old house I could grab the grass and pull it up and there'd be almost no root. I don't think it's grubs, I think fungus. The old man at the feed store can hook you up.

Corn meal is a natural anti-fungal and won't hurt anything.

If it pulls up like loose carpet, grub worms or june bugs. If it's still tight, fungus.
Grubworm control in one granular application works. I use Weedex for everything else, well worth the $ for annual service.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Brown Patch. Treat it with a labeled fungicide.

Do not know anyone elses background but I manage turf for a living and some of these guys are correct, you have Brown Patch (Rhizoctonia solani). This weather has brought it on, usually more prevalent in fall than this time of year. Azoxystrobin or Pyraclostrobin are the chemicals you will want to treat it with. Unfortunately I do not know what is available on the shelves at local stores but I bet Scott's makes a granular form fungicide for it available to homeowners. There may even be a hose end sprayer form available. Check the label and follow accordingly.
As for grubs, you will not see the damage from them just yet as the beetles are just starting to lay eggs and larvae will move up in the soil and start to feed on roots in late summer/early fall. NOW is the time to put your grub control out to prevent damage.

Corn meal is good for any lawn, you may want to try some dish soap in water as well.

Looks like Brown Patch to me, I’d treat it, then detach it followed by aeration as soon as it’s dry enough. Some will say it’s overkill but that’s how I’ve always done it and never had more than a little die off. If not put in check you could loose a big portion of it pretty quick. Fertilizing your yard correctly helps prevent it as well but it’s been so wet a lot of people are about to be fighting it. The pics look like you have a thatch issue that needs addressed anyway, most people never give it a single thought but as yards age they need a proper manicure

Fungus hit my back yard last year. I treated but too late. Putting in a whole new back yard this year.

X4 for the corn meal. Leave the chemicals alone.

Chinch bugs. I leave them alone. They make ugly spots in your grass but do no harm to the roots. The blades are composted which adds fertilizer. The spot will eventually be greener. Here you go. Look above the brown grass.

Look above the brown grass. I can bring you a few armadillos to help with the composting if you want. A 6 pack of Shiner bock for each plus gas.

My guess is fungal. Looks similar to an area in my yard and the man said it was fungal. He treated it and it corrected.
Call the man.
