 Whats the scam?

My wife listed an antique dresser we had on facebook marketplace. We had people right away being pretty aggressively interested and texting asking us to respond back with some kind of 6 digit voice code. They said it was to prove we were real and not a scam. I got the scam feeling pretty strong and just had her blocked them.
So what are they trying to do?

They sent the 6 digit code to her in a text and asked she respond and give the 6 digit code back in the response. Im not tech savvy at all, but it seemed weird enough to cease dealing with them.

This is not unusual. State Farm on line bill pay did not recognize my iPhone. Sends a six digit code to my text with 20 seconds to respond.

I buy and sell all the time on FB. I have never heard of this.

If you give the verification code to the buyer as they asked, they use that code along with the phone number you posted in the ad to get their own free Google phone number. With that new number, cyber crooks could use it for illegal activities, and you would never know about it. An even bigger risk, scammers could get access to your Google account if they have enough information.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

They do this on Craig's list, I never respond to anyone sending a code. It's a scam! True local buyers don't do this.
