When the 2022 Tundras are out, that’s what I will likely buy to replace the present Tundra. But, if I don’t like the truck, for whatever reason, and if the wife wants to do a trailer drag into serious mountains, I’ll go with Ford. Probably I’d go with an F250, non-dually. All that car driving in the mountains of Arizona, NM, and Utah gave me a big appreciation on upgrade and downgrade driving, and caused me to give some serious thought about maybe needing a 3/4 ton truck. I could do the mountain towing with the Tundra, but it might be rather slow going up or down. So, here’s the question. If I go with the F250, what engine do I need? I’d rather not spend the big bucks on a diesel, so which gasser has the grunt I’d need?

No clue on a gasser but I hope you get what your looking for!!! The engine braking on the diesel is sure nice going down grades but if you don’t need one I wouldn’t spend the money either. The brakes alone on the 3/4 will be a big improvement on the Yota so you will be fine with a gasser.

Go with Godzilla. The mileage difference between the 6.2 and 7.3 is negligible, but the power difference is noticeable. If you're going to be towing a lot, get the tallest gears you can, 4.10 or 4.30s. Again, the mileage isn't going to be hurt as badly as the seat of the pants dyno makes up for.

I moved from a 2012 Tundra to a 2020 F250 with the 7.3. I could not be happier. Much more powerful and the creature comforts of the cab are much nicer. I looked at the top of the line Tundras and they just did not compare. I love Toyota’s reliability, but they have major gaps to fill to be competitive in the truck market.
My F250 has 15k on the clock with no issues other than a recall on the backup camera.

Go with the 7.3. I’m on my last diesel, don’t pull much anymore.

I've been weighing some of the same issues. I sold my truck and am shopping. We may or may not get an RV, but thinking about the towing. We may go to CO once a summer, maybe twice.
Bottom line is, we won't hit a mountain highway near enough to justify a diesel. I'm looking at 1/2 ton Rams and Chevys. I'm likely going with a Ram.
Some of them come with a 3.92 rear end. I figure that is good enough for the very very low percentage of annual mountain driving to skip that stinking, non evaporating, high priced diesel. I'm convinced diesel owners pour it on the concrete by the pump to keep gasers from using that pump. Stepping in diesel to get into a 70-80k truck is like walking in dog crap through the front door of a mansion.

I’ve done a bit more looking, and it appears that whatever gas engine truck I buy will get about the same poor mileage under load that my present Tundra does. I get about 10 mpg towing our mid sized TT. No-load driving, at least the driving I do around here on local roads gets me 15 mpg. From what I read, the Ford Godzilla 7.3 engine gets about 14 on the road in the F250.
Well, I’m in no rush. We’ll see what the Tundra looks like (looks and performance). As for a space age dashboard, I neither need it or want it.

How old is the Tundra you have now? I’m in the market for a used Tundra if you sell it.

Trying to decide between a V-6 and a diesel sounds like trying to choose between.....well....no comparison. A V-6 isn't even in my vocabulary. If you ever find me driving a full sized truck with a V-6 just put me in a nursing home. I've lost it. EDIT: What is the age, mileage, price on your Tundra? If semi low mileage, 50k miles or lower, I'm a cash buyer. Send me a PM if you like. I'm tired enough of dealing with dealerships I may call it a day if you are a quarter under new. If not I'm probably getting a new Ram as soon as I see what the new incentives are for May. Some of the best deals are far far away. Southwest Airlines...."Want to get away"....Yes!

I just moved from the Tundra to the 2021 F 250 Tremor edition 7.3 great power and about the same gas mileage I was getting with the the tundra. I am pulling a 36 ft 5th wheel no issues at all.

Freerange, it’ll be a while before I sell the present Tundra.
DannyB, note that I am not comparing a V6 with a diesel. I initially said that I’ll be going with a gasser. If Toyota sticks their twin turbo V6 in the 2022 Tundra, then it appears to come down to a choice of the Tundra or the Ford with the Godzilla engine. Obviously, the F250 will pull a monster load, but I don’t have a monster travel trailer.
Thanks to Texasredneck70, now I have a mileage comparison between the V8 Tundra and the Ford F-250/Godzilla. I needed that, and I wanted an owner comparison between those two vehicles. Great and valuable info.
So, here’s where I am right now. The travel trailer I tow is easily towed by the present Tundra, at approx 6500#. I’ve no plans to get a larger TT, so the 2022 Tundra, which is to be more tow capable than the present Tundra and have better gas mileage, should be all I need for mostly flat land towing. But, if the wife wants to travel in the mountains, the F250 with the big V8 should be a better choice. It’s going to be a tough decision, since it’d be hard for me to leave the bulletproof Tundras. I can’t wait to have a look at the 2022 Tundra, and see what their towing package looks like. I’d go ahead and crawl all over an F250, but that would cause salesmen to call and email every 30 minutes, just like the last time I looked at an F250. And I hate pesky salesmen.
Money is burning a hole in my pocket. I’m ready to make a decision, but it isn’t possible yet. Waiting is tough

Waiting is tough I’m one that doesn’t care what load weight is behind you, your tow vehicle weight matters more then what people realize, I don’t care if you are pulling 4k, 8k, 12k. The safest choice is the heavier vehicle. In this case F250. I know 1/2 ton tundra’s, Ford, dodge, chevy etc can pull 4k or 8k etc, but still not as safe as 3/4 ton. Go test drive a 7.3 f250 Tremor. Print of a fake business card, and hand it to sales man. Personally I’d use txhnter/trex’s number

Barry How do you like the 7.3 in the Tremor. So far I've been amazed at how well the Tremor rides both on and off road vs. FX4 models

People get hung up on the HP number. Towing a TT with a half ton then a 3/4 ton is night and day difference. I hate towing anything bigger than a Bay Boat with a half ton.

I've towed many years with a Dodge 2500 / Cummins and never had to worry about mountains or flat ground pulling a small boat or a 35 ft RV fully loaded.Best trucks for me.

John2, I understand that folks have favorite trucks, and I’m sure what you have is perfect for your needs. But, I don’t really want a diesel truck, and don’t need one. What I have right now, 07 Tundra, has worked great for me. It’s 380 HP and a tow capacity of about 10,500 pounds. If what I read is correct, Toyota should have about 410 HP (plus or minus) and a towing capacity of maybe 13,000 pounds, or more, in the 2022 model. That’s short of what the Godzilla engined F250 can do (430 HP and 15,000 tow capacity?). And I’m expecting the new Tundra to have better mileage than mine (15 mpg), and a good bit better than the F250/Godzilla (13 to 14). So, sight unseen, I’m leaning toward a new Tundra and hoping it’ll meet my expectations.
Truth be told, I’m just wanting a new truck. I sure don’t need one, having 173,000 miles on a Tundra that should be good for 300,000 miles (says Toyota).
If I don’t spend some money, my kids will get it all. Where’s the fun in that?

Yes, I understand where your coming from and my choice in trucks is mainly for towing. The 1 ton I have now is not a grocery getter and I seldom drive it anymore. 2016 with less than 15K miles so it usually stays in the garage since we have another vehicle. If we ever sell the 43 ft RV then the truck will go for a single wheel rear.
