I have never been able to applaud my wife enough for making our girls avid readers. She began reading to them as soon as they could sit still long enough to pay any attention and soon had all of them viewing trips to the library as if they were going to a toy store. I know I've made this comment before in other threads but there is nothing more valuable you can do for your kids than to make them avid readers.

My wife did the same thing and my grown children have started their's out, reading to them as infants.
Studies show that it's EXTREMELY important.

I dont care much for reading.

I can count on one hand the number of times I visited the public library as a kid. However, today I have to wonder if I had not achieved more in life if I had visited it as often as I did a ball field.

Been reading to my almost 5 year old every night since he was born. He can talk and formulate thoughts better than any kid his age we've seen. I think it will pay off long term.

In the past I had an Evil Step-Mother. Aa punishment, she enrolled me in a "Book Of The Month Club".

Punishment, I had to read 2 books a month.

I was able to hide in my room, thus away from her. I survived and love to read today at 72.

Never been in a public library in my life but I have a really crazy story that involves a public library last year.

It started in the early 1990's when my Grandpa passed away. All of his books were donated to a local library and someone stamped each book inside the cover with a stamp that stated the name of the estate the books were donated from. I still keep in contact with a couple of my teachers from high school and one of them works at a public library now. Every so often the library will go through and cull out books from their inventory to get rid of for various reasons. Well as they were being culled my high school teacher came across a old animal tracks book that she thought that I might like. When she opened the cover the book had my Grandpas estate stamp inside the cover and I was able to get that book back from her last year. The funny thing is I remember that book from my childhood and had been looking for a copy of it just for the memories. The odds of that exact book finding its way back to me had to be in the 1:1million+ catagory.

Crazy thing how kids can change you.
I never cared for reading and really struggled at it, then I married a very smart girl. She always read to our kids. When I had to read to them I stumbled through it. After our second kiddo, I was reading like a pro.
My girls are the smartest women I know. Their mom definitely showed them, and me, the way.

My wife nearly beat reading as a skill into all four of my kids and now the oldest is headed to UIL State in Journalism Headline Writing and Editorial as Salutatorian of her 2021 class. We have come full circle.
