Glad to see Nolan county is still excluded. Buck management should be left to the landowner and the people who lease it. We try to manage the bucks on our property and after five years it is showing positive results. But I wonder how many 12 1/2 inch bucks are shot and not tagged because of this rule.
I have yet to shoot a buck that allowed me to first measure its antler spread.

I have a question... What happens if you have a bunch of "genetically challenged" deer that only have basket racks-but may have upward of 8-10 points???? They are not legal to shoot, so they are allowed to continue to live & breed and those genetics are then continued. I ask this because I hunt public land, and from what I have heard, they have always had the AR's in place, and yet I did not see a SINGLE buck deer during season. My buddy did see a basket 7 point that he was certain did not meet the regs as it walked directly under his stand. After the season ended I did FINALLY see some buck deer, but all of them were equipped with basket racks! None of them met regs. I saw several 4 & 6 points. I also found my first shed this year while scouting for new places to hunt. It had 3 points, and was probably 8" from base to tip-that was a basket rack for sure. I would guess his inside spread would be 8" at most...
I'm not for, or against the regs, but the public land I'm hunting HAS A PROBLEM with genetics that I don't see how the regs are going to solve. Again, I'm just asking a question and not in any way for, or against, the regs. I just think this is a unique situation that regs won't address. If it matters, I did see some spike bucks after season that would have been legal to shoot for meat in the freezer. I'll see how this year looks and if it does not get better, I need a lease!
A hog is nothing more than a bullet receptacle.

ARs have seemed to increased the age and size of bucks in bosque county, so from what I have seen since 2006 they work. I don't think the whole state needs them, but the part that did will now have them next year. I'm very interested in seeing what some of these counties begin producing in a few years.

The counties that have been under the Antler Restrictions for more than 2-3 years, have seen dramatic changes age with bucks having a 13" or greater inside spread rack and body size as well.
It will take some time, since it won't happen overnight!

Take a deep breath, and breathe in and breathe out!
It's not that bad, and if you worry about a border line deer, then just let him pass rather than take the chance.
That is AR's working as they are supposed to, as you are letting the buck live another day, and maybe go on to hunt him again next season.
That is the only way they will work, if people allow them time to work!
If you have a genetics problem then that will have to be addressed down the line, but lets get some mature deer on the ground first before we try to trash the AR's.

Give it time it will work I thought the same thing that it was a bunch of BS but it has made a BIG change in our deer herd,we see twice the deer!!

I think the new booklet of regs comes out in August, so it should be available this week.

Exactly! And it's not all about the horns. A dead deer has a hard time breeding and making more deer, and who doesn't want to see more deer?

I really don't think that all counties listed need them either. I would rather be able to use my 1 "buck" tag as I see fit... some yrs I may want to shoot a mature buck, other yrs I may would like to thin out a 3.5 yr old trash buck. I would gladly pass up much larger east tx deer to get ones like this gone.

Rifleman, THE COUNTY WILL NOW GO TO TWO (2) BUCKS. ONE "TRASH" AND ONE 13" OR GREATER. It's not to often a buck like the one in your pic comes up... He is the exception.

thats funny b/c we have one out on our personal hunting place, one out behind the house in nac co (which that one could possibly be considered a spike on one side)....and there were basically 6 shot last season very similar out on that lease.

Yes there can be and probably are pockets of genetically inferior deer in every county, but it's not the overall rule!

You can pretty much bet that in an AR county this deer would have been harvested in it's first year with hardened antlers.
Exactly why they allow spikes to be taken along with a 13" buck in most AR counties, as it's to purpose as I stated in an earlier reply is cull those inferior bucks.
That deer had a spike on one side long before he grew that kicker as an older buck.

I love this subject as it gets a lot of moaning and groaning, but the proof is in the pictures!
That would be a nice buck anywhere in the state!
Oh yeah, he also got to breed until the season ended last year and his genetics have spread as well.

Well ya'll are making me feel MUCH better! ARs are new for us this year "most" of the bucks we've killed in the past were just over 13" .
I'm nervous that me or one of the other hunters is gonna shoot one that's high and tight and not make 13". I'm sure there's a little leeway but I don't want to have that conversation with the GW.
If you read the regulation, now I am not saying this is how the game warden will read it. But it is telling you to use the ears as a guide. I will shoot one that is outside the ears, if that falls in a t 12.5 inches oh well. There is just now way else to determine the spread on a wild deer.
To determine if a buck has an inside spread measurement of at least 13 inches, look at the distance from ear-tip to ear-tip on a buck with ears in the alert position (see illustration).

I love the subject too, lol, but I will never get ticked off about it one way or another... most of the places I hunt are mld properties, with the exception of 4 that we want no part in when it comes to a doe slaughter. I just find it odd that TPWD approves management plans that don't even mention a spread requirement.

I've hunted in DeWitt now for about five seasons and my partner over thirty five, and we had the same concerns when they first started it over there.
The best way to handle it is if you aren't positively sure and have the deer looking straight at you with ears alert then just don't shoot.
It's hard at first, but once you see the results in a couple years of your patience it makes it all worth while!
My hunting partner hated the new rules also as he shot whatever walked out on opening day.
Now he love the AR's as he says he never thought he'd see the day that there would be big bucks and a lot of deer like he saw in the old days when they first got the ranch long ago.

Good for the TPWD! They have to enact ARs because there are too many yahoos who shoot anything with horns. Making it illegal is the only way to get these guys on board.
