My county (LimeStone) finally went to AR's! So not only is it now illegal for my neighbors to shoot he first little year and a half old 6 or 8 point that jumps the fence BUT now we can kill TWO bucks instead of One. One being 13" or wider and 1 spike! So no more passing those spikes cause I know it'll be my only buck for the year!
If you can't tell I'm all for it!!!

Congratulations. I'm in Cass county and they're really making a difference. I can be selective now instead of only seeing one buck all season. Last year i actually saw more bucks than does.

The AR's have been in effect in DeWitt county now for a few years and it's made a big difference every year.

Used to be it was kind of ho-hum the season is about to start, but now I'm getting pumped just thinking about it, and what I may see out of my stand.

I'm not talking 140 class or anything, but just the fact we are actually seeing more deer and bigger bucks instead of those little fork horn we used to on see years ago that if you were too slow, you watched them jump the fence and heard the familiar....BooooooM!

We have been in AR's for a while now and I am happy with it. I got more bucks this year than the other 3 years combined that I have lived here.

Jimbo n Ruger,

Were your counties 1 buck before the AR started. Maybe they are only doing it to 1 buck counties? I dunno.
Great to hear it has made a big difference.
I know what you mean Ruger. I shot the biggest buck I've seen at my place in SIX years.
Here he is...

I'm in the same county as Helo and there is no doubt it has helped. Last year there was a noticeable difference in quantity and quality bucks, can't wait to see what this year holds.

Most of those who complain are hunting in areas that have bigger problems than the AR's (Antler Restrictions, 13" wide) can actually help, and that is the genetics, as they claim it's protecting inferior deer, and I understand the problem, but the AR's aren't solely meant to address that so much as it's not a perfect program, and it's meant primarily to give the young deer a chance to get older and not be killed off as a young buck, like in the past, which is the bigger problem because you don't know if you have a genetic problem when all you have is young deer with small racks running around and few of them at that.

Spikes are usually legal, but think about it for a second that if a young buck is only a spike, (not all young bucks start off as spikes) then there is a chance (not all, but you gotta start somewhere) it may be one of those inferior bucks they are complaining about.

Also the others who complain are already on managed ranches and it hampers their management system they already had in place.

Again it's not a perfect system, and by no means written in stone as I'm sure TPWD can adjust it when they see the need, and it's just a tool that is now being used that in the past nobody seemed to care or want to do anything to stop the slaughter of if it's got horns it gets shot, and there lies the root of the problem now, because all the therobreds where killed off so some now have those inferior genes, but that's another problem that will have to be addressed, and the AR's are just a small step in that direction. IMHO!

Actually if we take your scientific numbers 50/50, it proves that AR's are working!

You have several groups who don't like them which are the genetics group, we are protecting inferior deer group, the killing spikes group, I thought you were supposed to be protecting the young bucks group, and then there isn't enough studies and data to make an accurate assesment group, the I paid money for the lease, don't care for horns, and I have the right to shoot what my license says I can group, and then finally only one group that does, which is the I like them because we are seeing the positive results group which is a pretty large group!

• SPECIAL ANTLER RESTRICTIONS:
• In selected counties (see County Listings, pgs. 70–93) there are special regulations for buck deer. In
these counties, the bag limit is two legal bucks, but only ONE may have an inside spread of
13 inches or greater. A legal buck deer is defined as having:
• a hardened antler protruding through the skin AND;
• at least one unbranched antler; OR
• an inside spread measurement between main beams of 13 inches or greater.
• To determine if a buck has an inside spread measurement of at least 13 inches, look at the distance
from ear-tip to ear-tip on a buck with ears in the alert position (see illustration). The 13-inch or
greater inside spread requirement does not apply to any buck that has an
unbranched antler.
• Definition of a point: A point is a projection that extends at least one inch
from the edge of a main beam or another tine. The tip of the main beam is
also a point.
• Does not apply on Level 2 or 3 MLDP properties.

Good Hunting,
Gary

I know it is a good thing to have AR, but I am against it on my land(I own it) for one reason. My boys are just now starting to hunt and I don't want them to be selective the first year or two. I want them to shoot one and be happy. I know the AR will teach them from the beginning to be selective, but they may not enjoy hunting if they never get to shoot anything. I guess they will shoot does. I have never shot a doe on my land.

Well ya'll are making me feel MUCH better! ARs are new for us this year "most" of the bucks we've killed in the past were just over 13" .

I'm nervous that me or one of the other hunters is gonna shoot one that's high and tight and not make 13". I'm sure there's a little leeway but I don't want to have that conversation with the GW.

This year quite a few counties in East Texas that were 2 buck counties already, were implemented with the Antler Restrictions...

Not all of these were 2 bucks, but some were already:

New counties under the antler restriction rule this fall include: Anderson, Angelina, Archer, Atascosa, Brazos, Brown, Chambers, Clay, Cooke, Denton, Ellis, Falls, Freestone, Grayson, Grimes, Hardin, Harris, Henderson, Hill, Hood, Hunt, Jack, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Kaufman, Liberty, Limestone, Madison, McLennan, Milam, Mills, Montague, Montgomery, Navarro, Newton, Orange, Palo Pinto, Parker, Polk, Robertson, San Jacinto, Smith, Stephens, Tarrant, Trinity, Tyler, Van Zandt, Walker, Wichita, Wise, and Young.

Glad to see Nolan county is still excluded. Buck management should be left to the landowner and the people who lease it. We try to manage the bucks on our property and after five years it is showing positive results. But I wonder how many 12 1/2 inch bucks are shot and not tagged because of this rule.

I have yet to shoot a buck that allowed me to first measure its antler spread.
