What is a good size? Looked at two, one a 25 ton and one a 27 ton.

Next size down is a 9 ton.

Looking to split oak, won’t see a lot of use but when it comes time to split we are gonna work.

Is a 27 ton way overkill or about right?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Go with the 27.

I have a 30 to split oak on my property. It gets worked, but wish it had more azz than that.

Go at least a 27 ton. Buddy of mine bought a 27 ton and he wishes he had bought more for spilling Oak and Mesquite. There are times it bogs hard and he hits the log with a mall to help it.

I have a 27 and it splits the chit out of oak, I’ve had some huge pieces where I had to stand the spitter up to get part of the log on it to split and had no problem splitting.
I have had it bog down on a big nasty knot though.

I agree. Go with the extra power. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

As stated, go as big as you can afford. Not a lot of cost difference between 25 and 27, and both will split it well. I have a 25 and the last tree I split was 44 inches across. Did a great job.

Get the more powerful one a make sure oit will split vertically also, some big oak logs will be too heavy to put on the deck, lift up to the deck.

Buddy has 7 ton and it's good for what he splits that's usually less than 15" in diameter.

I have a big fireplace and a bunch of old growth oak trees that died from drought or other problems that are up to 32" in diameter.
I hated watching those trees go to waste just because my equipment could not handle them.
After using axe and small tractor mounted 5 ton unit on smaller wood for decades, I broke down and got a 25 ton unit last season.
It was a game changer and my processing time dropped by 2/3!
It runs thru most stuff like hot knife thru butter but has two stage pump that will shift into low gear and push thru everything I have tried if you hold the handle.

Cheers,

27 ton.
My dad and a friend built one with a 30 ton cylinder that runs off the tractor hydraulics.
It'll split up a big trunk no problem.

I run my splitter off tractor hydraulics. No spark plugs or carburetors involved.

If you wont use it but once or twice a year, you might consider renting one from someplace. I know several equipment rental companies have these for rent. couple hundred bucks a year over 10 years adds up to about the same price as buying and there is no maintenance on a rental...

That’s the same thing my ol man was telling me when I told him I was gonna buy a splitter, might be good for some but, when I need it, I don’t want to have to mess with going somewhere to rent it, then use it, then have to take it back to the rental company.

That’s why I just bought one. It’s there whenever I need it.
