I have a 7x57AI that loves the 162 SST with RL-19 or 22, don't remember which. Gun has a 24" Proof Research barrel & I don't have a clue as to twist. Shots will touch @ 100 if the nut behind the trigger works correct. I have tried to measure twist but doesn't work for me, get a different result every time.

My proof barrel has the twist stamped on it. Actually it looks laser engraved or something. I can barely see it. It may be under your stock. Doesn’t really matter if it already shoots good though.

My unsatisfactory experience with the 162 SST was with a 1:9.5 barrel. Been poking around on the internet and there seems to be some consensus that a faster twist is required. I believe Fireman JG is a big fan of this bullet. It might be good to get his input. (No offense, Smokey Bear. I think you have the right answer.) I've loaded a shot a metric ton of 162 A-Max and 162 ELD-X in 7mm-08, 7mm-08 A.I., and .280 A.I. The twists have been 1:8.7, and 1:9. Those twist rates and a 162 just go together. After reading screws tight, barrel free floated, appropriate components, I think the 1:10 twist may be the problem. The only way to (kind of) overcome lack of twist rate is a stout powder charge. That's not a real fix, but it can make things work, if you're staying inside 500 yards. I've also loaded 154 SST in the 1:9 7mm-08 and they stacked inside 1 inch at 300 yards. So, the 6mm and 7mm SST bullets have been made to shoot tight for me. It has been a while since I made this post and was just now able to get back to it.... So to everyone who posted.. I read your notes and thank you.... After checking the screws, base, free float.. etc... all that is left is the 1:10 twist and I can't change that right now. I started down this path because I have been looking at an Aoudad hunt and the outfitter is concerned 7mm-08 or 7X57 might not be enough gun....so I got out my .280. The 7mm-08 is a Tikka and has a 1:9.5 twist and the 7X57 has a Shilen with 1:9. I have made some test loads for the Mauser and am heading to the range.... they are both "enough gun"...
