The biggest I have ever seen was the size of a softball. When I was 8 or 9 years old, I was at my grandparents place in Burnet. I was out in the garden with my grandfather picking veggies, when the storm hit. We ran under the shed he had on the corner of the garden watching it rain and hail. The majority of the hail was about quarter sized hail, but we had one monster hail stone that landed about 15 feet out in front of us in the soft dirt. I remember my grandfather saying "holy [censored] that's a big hail stone!" Dummy me, i ran out and grabbed it haha

Interesting, in my 68 years in Texas Ive never even noticed golf ball size. I sometimes joke that I live under a rock, but that mostly means Ive stayed so busy with a narrow focus that I dont keep up with news and current events, but i am out and about constantly. Im very surprised by the super large size hail reports.

It appears that I have been very lucky when it comes to hailstorms. Sure hope it stays that way.

A couple years ago we had tennis ball sized hail. You could hear it hitting the ground with a low rumble and it got louder as it got closer.

seen several pretty bad hailstorms in my life. Several that stand out ...

circa 1974, I was heading to the Chevy place on my motorcycle to get an inspection, my dad was following me in his 3 week old '74 3/4 ton truck. I could see this wall of hail coming my way when I was about a block away from the dealer. I ran a redlight as the hail started hitting, most were golf ball size with larger ones mixed in. I shot between several cars to pull inside one of the bays to get out of it, my dad pulled his truck up to where the bumper was touching the wall to hide as much as possible. The hail beat his new truck up pretty bad, busted out the windshield, drivers side window and mirror. This went on for several minutes and hail covered the streets like a heavy snow. When it was over and we got home, the hail had penetrated the cedar shake shingles on our house and thru the sheet rock ceilings along the north side of our house, along with all the windows on the north & west sides. Needless to say, I had a bunch of large bruises on my arms and tops of my legs, just glad I had a helmet on.

spring 2009, my daughter was out bridal shopping in NW Austin when a storm pushed thru her area and beat up her 2005 Dodge like a herd of monkeys with ballpeen hammers and the insurance company wanted to total the truck until I reminded them it was a Cummins, over $10k worth of damage.

edit: another one during the early 90s, was in Burnet helping my BIL change an injector pump on our '85 Suburban with 6.2l diesel (what a PITB). We had pulled the suburban up to his horse barn to work on it, when the hail hit, we jumped into the tin horse barn and watched the hail beat our suburban to pieces with golf ball sized hail. The sound inside the metal horse barn was deafening.

I haven't seen all that many bad hail storms, few golf ball sized. I've seen some larger, ones but they were soft and didnt do any damage. I've been on the Texas Coast most of my working life and we do not get the North Texas/Oklahoma bad weather. If we get hail, its pea size, same for my place at Lake Sam Rayburn.

My mother grew up on a cattle ranch in Mill Creek Oklahoma. She said they had softwall sized hail when she was growing up. Mother said an older lady that lived down the road got caught working in her garden in a hail storm and hail beat her down and killed her.

Thanks, Billy

that reminds me ... my dad used to tell the story when he was a kid living in Oklahoma early 1920s (Mountain Home if memory serves me) and they lived on a farm. Hailstorm came in, everyone scrambled to get inside, hail started coming thru the roof and ceiling and everyone jumped under tables or grabbed cast iron skillets to put over their head. His uncle remembered the horses were tired to a hitching rail off the front porch, so he ran to untie them and as he got the horses loose and turned to come back in the house a softball size hailstone hit him in the top of the head dropping him like a rock, then it just pummeled him laying there on the ground. He was dead when the storm was over.

Late 80's in Arlington. Softball size. All my south and west windows were busted and one actually went through the roof of garage and broke the windshield on my truck. Camper was parked in the driveway and was destroyed. I heard hundred of cattle were killed in that storm around Arlington/Mansfield - back when a lot of land was rural.

Co-worker lived in South Arlington in the 80s when they had baseball size hail. It was going through roofs. He watched his neighbor across the street with a football helmet on trying to protect his car with sleeping bags. Not all hail is the same. We had golf ball size in Roanoke once that was soft but had a hard core. I got lucky when a flight to Chicago out of DFW got canceled. I left the airport with baseball size hail just to my north along 114. 2 minutes earlier I would have driven right in to it. It broke windshields on planes.. When I got to Dove the median was covered in huge hail stones.
