Just had tire monkey show me a couple mangled lug nuts from my Expedition. Said they had to hammer the socket on to get them off. Also something about a class action suit on Ford about them. I told him I wasn’t buying new ones, get them back on. I’ll go get 1/2 dozen from dealer to replace the worst ones. I’m thinking tire monkeys aren’t using correct socket size, and/or too much juice from air tools. Anybody else have this issue?

Yes Sir. We had the same thing on my wife’s Expedition. Ford uses a 2 piece lug nut and when they get heated up they swell - at least that’s what we were told. I replaced all of them with aftermarket solid 1 piece lug nuts on her Expedition. Not worth not being able to change a flat tire on the side of the road because you can’t get the lug nut off.
You should have been here yesterday!

I put on the ones from Discount Tire once they told me about the problem.

Those are two piece lug nuts. The chrome caps were/are a horrible idea. You can use the correct size socket and the correct amount of torque from your impact and eventually they are still going to start to separate. Once they start to separate, they start getting buggered up and you end up having to hammer sockets on to the lug nuts, and beat them out of the socket with a hammer and a screwdriver. It's a major PITA for the tire monkeys too. When I was in the tire & wheel business, I kept a full line of all sizes of aftermarket SOLID chrome lug nuts in stock. At the first sign of factory 2 piece lug nut issues, I always suggested that the customer replace all of them with solid nuts. You don't want to be stuck on the side of the road somewhere fighting with lug nuts. Discount Tire can take care of you.

I've replaced Lord knows how many of them LOL. The only thing worse than those lug nuts, is when people start having lug nut issues and replace them a few at a time with different size/type lug nuts. All miss matched. You end up needing 2 or 3 different sizes of sockets just to get one damn wheel off.

Thanks for the replies! Guess I’ll be making another trip to tire store. I don’t have these issues with my F350.

It's not just Ford's either, there are lots of those type of lug nuts out there on different vehicles and they all do the same thing in time. Heating & cooling is their first enemy, then they start to rust in between the lug nut & the cap (especially in a salt environment). Sometimes they get so buggered up, you have to turn your impact & compressor all the way up, hammer on a smaller socket, and break them off to get the wheel off. Then of course pop a new stud in, which is easy.

Yep, got called out to the side of the highway one evening because she had a flat. Tried to change it and mangled the F out of 2 of those POS lugs and at the time I thought it was me using wrong socket and I quit and she had to get it towed. But after googling it I found tons of the same issues.

I don’t understand why Ford is still doing it. A quality set of lug nuts is relatively cheap. I understand doing it, then saying, oh snap that didn’t work. Why keep doing it for less than a $5 profit. lol
