What is the best herbicide for briars and brush that you can buy OTC to keep a lane cleared after initial brush hogging? We have a few work days scheduled at the lease and want to get a jump on things before we hit triple digit temps.

Triclopyr will kill anything. The most common brand name for it is Remedy, but you can get generic triclopyr for a little cheaper. It’s expensive but it works. Mix it about a pint to three gallons of diesel. Hot weather will help because the diesel adds to the effect.
It’ll all decompose in 4 to 6 months.

Kind of a different question.
First, if you want to be more effective, spray the brush and let it die and then shred it. But right now isn't the best time of year to do that. Or, if you have someone to follow immediately behind the shredder to spray brush stumps, HS2's suggestion of Remedy & diesel works well.
Just spraying brush this time of year isn't as effective as when the plant is fully leafed out and the weather is warmer. When brush is fully leafed and in growth mode, it carries the herbicide to the roots much better for a much higher percentage of kill rate.
Broadcast spraying of a sendero or road in a ranch environment probably shouldn't include diesel. It will kill everything, and probably won't make a rancher very happy, if it's leased land. Broadcast spraying a broadleaf/woody herbicide like Remedy just using an 80/20 surfactant is probably spinning your wheels this time of year. By next deer season you won't be able to tell you sprayed.

this when it get hotter. At Tractor supply. Works great for me. Takes a week for everything to start die. Works faster in full sun.

It’ll all decompose in 4 to 6 months. This is correct Remedy will kill a 6" mesquite tree when sprayed all the way around the trunk from the base to about 3' up. The diesel is used simply to make it adhere to the plant/tree better. If what you are spraying is leafy brush, then you can kill it typically with just roundup or one of the many generic brands such as the ones that TSC sells. To kill it though takes a much more thorough coating on the brush then what remedy would take.

Don't know what kind of sprayer you are going to use on that lane, but here is what I do. I am totally inept when it comes to tools and making stuff, so If I can put this together, so can you. It is very simple to make. I went through two sprayers that I bought, one at tractor supply and one at Atwoods in 3 years. They just don't hold up. I paid $299 for each one. Hose's rotted, tank got a hole in it from bouncing over the ground full of water, tires went flat from weight of water. Just did not hold up. So, here is what I came up with and it cost me about $125 and I have used it for the last 3 years. Now that cost is not completely accurate as I already had one of the main parts. A battery jump starter to run the 12v pump. . https://www.autozone.com/miscellane...-battery-charger-jump-starter/298616_0_0 Of course any 12v battery would work also. Now here is what I had to buy. 1. 55 gallon plastic barrel...$15 2. two 6' hoses...$12 3. two 4' sections of pvc, two joint sections of pvc, two water sprinkler heads,(not the whole head, just the dial part), and a T section of pvc that had a hose connection. $15 4. A water pump..$80... https://www.autozone.com/miscellane...-battery-charger-jump-starter/298616_0_0I ran one hose to the barrel from the pump, and one hose from the pump to my pvc sprayer. I hope the photos can give you a better ideal of what I am talking about.

Well done Mr. T.
I’ve been on an eradication campaign targeting poison oak and briars. This is mostly along roads, trails, etc.
I use a tank mounted sprayer on a 4 wheeler. WITH A MASK and nurse gloves. I prefer Remedy with diesel but just about all broad leaf herbicides work with diesel. Generic Store brands are cheaper and have the same formulations.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Slick little set up you built there Mr.T! I just built one last fall for my side by side to spray fence lines and also to spray my smaller areas like cattle and horse pens. I bought almost everything to build it from www.sprayersupplies.com except for the 1.25" square tubing and the small leg tank. I ended up putting about $400 or so into it but the same type of rig would be at least $1k if you bought it. I built it with a 6' long boom that goes into my receiver hitch. On that boom is 5 flat tip spray nozzles (.3gpm) that are on a valve. Then I have a .4gpm nozzle on each side of the boom angled at a 45 and those are each on a separate valve as well so that I can spray down fence lines on either side. I have another valve that is to a 25' hose and hand wand for spraying in the corners of fences and also in areas I cannot get the machine into. Last, I have one more valve that allows me to bypass the homemade valve body and circulate liquid back into the holding tank. I did this not only for mixing chemicals in it good but more to allow control pressure on the nozzles to keep from getting to high and creating a 'mist' instead of droplets. I have a cheap pressure gauge so that I simply open or close that bypass valve to maintain between 20-30lbs on the nozzle tips. When spraying with the hand wand I will close that bypass and allow a full 60psi on it. The valves area all 1/2" pvc ball valves that you can buy at any plumbing supply house for about $1 each. The nozzle body and tips with a screen in each one run about $7 each. I can tell you this, I do enjoy a cold beer now while spraying my fences and no longer wake up the next day with a sore arm or shoulder from holding a damn wand all day long! lol The boom part of the sprayer will cover about a 10' path when I turn both end nozzles on with it and I can do a 1/3 acre cattle pen in less than 5 minutes and kill all the broadleaf weeds very well with it.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Thank you all for your time and responses. So much good information. Remedy or equivalent with a good surfactant. Hotter weather with a more mature plant is preferred. Spray, kill, cut.
I have a TS sprayer that was purchased last year and will be happy if I get another few applications, then on to Mr. T’s method.
Thanks again for all the help.

If mesquite is part of the brush you are spraying, don't cut the mesquite until the following year. It takes time for the poison to completely get to the roots and you will also have a small percentage that will require a second dose the next year. Best time is when soil temps are 75 degrees or more a foot below the surface (safe bet is July/August). This only applies to mesquite.

For briars and brush I like Crossbow or its generic. Works well on the briars and mesquite. TSC sells a generic for about $15 a quart.
