Has anyone ever used one of these? My dad just gave me his, which was my grandpas before. I hear it is pretty accurate, but will it only work for varmints like yotes and smaller? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I had a Model 788 in 223. I loved it! Wish I would have never sold it. As for 6mm...awesome caliber.
The 788 actions are still favs among custom builders.

The 788 has a reputation for being very accurate despite the fact that it was a cheaper option to the Rem 700. In fact, the rumor has been that Remington discontinued the 788 because it was more accurate and taking away sales from the M700.
As for the 6mm cartridge, it is essentially equivalent to the 243. So if you think the 243 is ok for deer, then the 6MM Rem would be also.

6mm will be fine for deer sized game. unless i am mistaken it is a muscled up .243.

Thanks for the info guys. I read that at least a 90 grain should be used for deer sized game, is this correct? How hard is it to refinish the stock? It needs to be redone and I would like to do a darker tone.

You are correct...a little hotter than the standard 243Win. Damn fine load for Texas deer IMO.

IMO - the weight is not quite as important as the bullet type. Any good bonded bullet in the 80 - 100 grain range will be sufficient. The 85 grain TSX would be optimal....again IMO.

fowlplayr is right, in this day in age of custom slugs, often times the grainage is not as important. TSX, Sierra, and good old tried and true Nosler Partition. you can get the heavier slugs if it makes you feel better. http://www.texashuntingforum.com/ubbthre...true#Post937004that is a lnk to a previous thread about refinishing stocks. While i have never done one myself, I read this and thought it had some great tips from people who sound like they knew what they were talking about.

Hey Jaime, what's up Bud? They got it right a 6MM is very close to a .243 they are inherent tack drivers. On finishing the stock, it really doesn't look that bad. I have known of folks who have refinished guns only to find out it drops the value of the firearm significantly.

About the only disadvantage to the 6MM versus the 243 is that it has not been very popular, so ammo is not as easy to find. But I believe that Remington, Winchester, Federal, and Hornady all make ammo. I'd start with plane old 100gr Remington Core Lokts. (I'm assuming that you are not a reloader). Let us know how she performs!

That's true. And...if you decide you want to get creative...check out some of the custom load sites like Conley Precision. You should be able to find the perfect round for you rifle.

Great combination of caliber and action. As stated above this was an incredibly accurate production gun. The caliber is very flat shooting...was and still is used by many benchrest shooters in some form or another (6PPC,6BR,Dasher).
Also, like fowlplayr said, the bullet type is more important than the weight. I prefer Nosler Partitions, but there are other comparable ones that will do the trick.

I've been shooting a 6mm for about 30 yrs and it's my "go to gun" great for deer and hogs.
788 is a legendary action, very desirable, I'd think twice before refinishing the stock, but I would scope it.

I'm glad to hear all the good news about this rifle. I knew my dad had rifles, I just didn't know what kind, I know he has a 30/30, but didn't know about the 6mm. It is my first rifle and I'm proud to own it as it belonged to my grandfather before my dad. I'm new to hunting and can't wait to shoot my first hog or deer. Since i've been helping at the lease and will go again in 2 weeks to help clean out some old trees and such, I get to go opening day!! Can't wait to use my rifle and then skin em with my BTK!! Should be getting the scope mounts and scope soon. Thanks for all the info fellas.

See if there's any storys that go with the gun or the reason the stock is the way it is. I have an old 22 with cloth electrical tape on the stock. When dad handed it over to me he made me promise to NEVER take that tape off (he said hell the tape's been on there 70-75 years). There's a great story about how it got dammaged when a coon chased my uncle out of a tree. (well ok great to him and me...)

Sorry, I don't think I'll ever sell it. It was my grandfathers, then my dads, and I hope one day it will belong to one of my sons.

It would be so cool to take a Deer with a gun my grandfather owned. That, would be a Trophy.

6mm is an awesume round, couple that with it being in a 788,and it can't be beat. Check the ballists on the 6mm, they are great for anything from varmints to whitetails. I have a 6mm in a 700 BDL, and three 788's. Only thing I wish is that the 6mm was a 788 also. Great actions and very accurate rifles. Glad you decided not to refinish yours, from the pic it looks like it is still in great shape and to me , being from a grandparent, I would preserve it in the shape I got it and used it with pride as being a rifle from generations before and "PLEASE" if possible, keep the tradition and hand it down to your younguns. That rifle will be around and still a fine rifle long after we are gone! One of my 788's is a hand me down and my son has already latched on to it and hunts with it with pride.(He still knows that it is mine, but loves to hunt with it).As stated, these are great rifles and should be hunted with pride from an era of great rifles. I had one in 22-250, I was really happy with it. Previous owner used it for deer and it dropped them like bricks. Good guns!
