Started 54 eggs in the incubator on February 28, tomorrow starts lockdown meaning eggs don't get turned and within the next 2-3 days the hatching begins. These are Coturnix quail and go from hatched to mature in 8 weeks.

I wouldn't call coturnix upland birds
they're more Caged birds
fat and lazy, bred for quick meals
watch one fly and you'll laugh your socks off
If you want more game birds I can sell you breeding pairs of
Gambel California Valley Bobwhites

Gambel California Valley Bobwhites Had to post in this section so no one would tell me I was in the wrong section. I posted here because there Quail. They have been domesticated for over 2000 years and they don't fly very well. We raise them for meat and eggs, pretty tasty once on the plate. If I had a large flight pen I'd be raising the other varieties.

are they any harder to raise than chickens? Nope, very EZ and with being mature in 8 weeks they can reproduce quicker than rabbits. All you need are 8 females, 2 rosters and a good incubator.

Just opened up the incubator and placed in tub with heater, total so far is 31. Hatch rate is 57% with some late hatches to come.

I put them in a 100 gal. Water tank with shavings on the floor until there fully feathered keeping heat lamp on them. After that they go into a grow out cage. I have a chicken wire cover for a lid to protect from barn cats and other critters. They stay in the tank for approx 2-3 weeks.

How many can fit in the 100 gal water tank? I have wanted to do this but had no idea what to keep the little ones in or how much room they need.

Once in grow out cages that are 24"x48x12" can hold 15-18 birds. If you want to start raising quail PM me and I'll help.

Wish I had a place to do this again. Back in the 80's I raised some. I got 2 dozen in the spring and ended up with over a hundred by the end of the summer. And also had lots of eggs to eat.

Yep you'll be overrun with eggs. They lay one per day mostly in the afternoon. We eat them all the time ratio is about 3 quail eggs to one chicken egg.
