Had two appointments set up today with two different contractors for two different jobs. One was to get a driveway moved and topped and one was for a pool patio. Both no-call, no-showed. I sent texts and voice mail with both and neither returned the message. The driveway guy rescheduled twice last week so my expectations for today were low. Still took time out of my day to meet with them.

Had another guy call me back about the driveway, met me about an hour later and we shook hands on a $30k job.

If I say I'm going to meet you, you can bet your paycheck I'm showing up.

People don’t really want to work anymore. Want the money but never want to show up.

If he does great work make sure to recommend him here.

I would of done it for less....

Money is like your backside...it is yours and it is portable.

IME for every guy that flakes on you, there are guys waiting in line that know how to keep appointments. Pay them instead.

Same thing here in Breckenridge. Can't get anyone to work and half the time you get someone to show up it's sub-par work. I was a commercial contractor for 24 years and I can't believe how things have changed. Customer service is almost nonexistent anymore.

A neighbor of mine is a great electrician but he moved a few miles away,i'm needing a few things done and he says yeah i'll be there tomorrow,no show.A month or so later I wanted something else done so I call him again and about the same answer. Now i'm thinking I want some outlets in a different place but I don't think i'll be calling him anymore.

My son does stone, marble and tile work. I asked him a long time ago if he saw $500 sitting on a park bench would he come back tomorrow to get it? Because if that's his method of operation the $500 won't be there tomorrow, the guy with the successful business, the nice house, the pretty wife and the new boat got it yesterday.

Thank The Lord he took that talk to heart and that is his business plan.
He answers or promptly returns calls and more importantly makes the call if he can't make the appointment on time.

If it’s a buddy deal I don’t mind getting put off but if I’m paying as a normal customer, no communication and I’ll move on.

There is almost no excuse to justify a no call, no show. One of my biggest peeves in this life.

If you give your word, deliver. If something crazy happens and you cant? Communicate. It ain't hard.

Then unleash the liars. I worked with men who called in and lied about the death of their Mother, Father, Brother. because they got drunk or were cheating on their wives.

I caught myself in a situation last year where I didn't tell the whole truth in a difficult situation amongst peers that I care about. I regret that, and will take that to my grave.

Been dealing with the same thing on various projects but the sprinkler guys have been standing me up on the regular, one guy called me this afternoon that had stood me up 3 times already and said he was on his way over. I told him to save his precious time and a few other savory words.

I prefer to piss people off and be early.

Very common these days. He prolly had a bigger job come up / more money , he put you on back burner. Handshake means nothing these days. Sad times. Get it under contract.

The contractors that I work with are 30 minutes early and already looking at the site. If you show up on time they may be gone.

My pawpaw borrowed his seed money from bankers on his handshake back in the 30's. I try to live up to that standard.

Times we live in unfortunately...ethics, hard work and a man standing firm on his word or a hand shake is a trait that is very quickly fading. I’m dealing with plumbers, electricians, carpenters, handy-men, etc...now on a few projects and it’s nearly a full time babysitting job. The plumber I use is 76 and works circles around the other younger jack-wads.

People suck, now more than ever. It's really easy to start a business but much harder to keep it going. Sadly too many people will excuse these losers, but then most of the excusers are also calling-in sick on a regular basis or not showing up on time as well.

We use a lawn service for our complex; job takes less than 1 day per week and he makes $18k gross. That's $90k/yr if he can find four others to fill out his week. He is allowed to show up whenever but has a specific list of things to do. He shows up less than half the time and the HOA board is about to fire him. He's the fourth provider in the last seven years-they have all been pretty worthless. It's not technical work but inherent laziness is hard to overcome.

I have no idea of your situation, but $18,000 a year sounds like a lot for cutting a yard...... but you say 1 day a week. If he is their weekly that is only $346 a week. I dont know what you complex is or what all he does, but when lawn care for a "complex" comes to mind $346 sounds dirt cheap, try paying someone, maintaining equipment fuel time etc. on that. Now sure its his fault for taking the job on the terms, but its not too hard to maybe see why he doesnt care if he keeps or looses your business.

In the last several years I have hired out a metal building, septic install and most recently a driveway. I used someone form a more rural area on all of them and had a personal recommendation on each. I've been completely pleased. There are still good folks out there who do what they say they will.
