Where are you located? Our Rimfire match would be a great start and we encourage youngsters. We’ve had a few out and they have beat a lot of the grownups. We hold ours in Valley View next one is on the 14th of this month.

I don't know about Waco, but our local 4-H has a youth shooting team. TSRA also holds events for youths.

Check with your school district, they might have a program. Also check with any local gun ranges, if there is something in the area they should know. Area gun clubs might be a good place.to get info.

Several of the Schools and the 4H in our area have competitive teams.
We had a huge SCTP shoot at the club two weeks ago.

Go for it!

Do y’all have an open sights division?

4H can seem a bit overwhelming - but they have a great & flexible program.
Best place for you is to contact them here (your local office)- https://mclennan.agrilife.org/links/4-h/ - and they can guide you to YOUR local shooting clubs (they're not listed online)
IF your county doesn't have a shooting club that meets your needs, you're allowed to join one in a nearby county.

Here is an online guide to the State program that all local clubs follow: https://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/shooting-sports/
(scroll down, and click on 'RIFLE', then LOOK at all the options that are open state-wide! - link here)

You should also consider going thru a '4H coaches training' - you can become a coach/asst coach, etc.

Once your son is a 4-h member, he is eligible to go to competition meets all over the state;
there is also an annual 'shootout' (open especially to beginners) in Brownwood, Tx. -http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/wp-content/uploads/shooting_sports_extravaganza_2020_2.pdf

My son is 12 and I plan on having him shoot at least 1 or 2 matches this year to see if he gets into it.

Do y’all have an open sights division?

Sorry we don’t. We are affiliated with PRS and our shooting mirrors the PRS big gun matches so they go from 25-300 yards. You’d probably need a scope unless you’re awesome with irons. We do have different divisions, we have open class which is pretty much anything goes. We have production class which means it has to be a stock rifle with no changes and scope combo costing under $1500, we have senior and ladies division as well. These classes only matter for the PRS standings everyone is lumped together in the league runnings.

We pay back half at every match and keep the other half for end of the year prizes along with our sponsor prizes. Last year we had enough stuff on the table for everyone that qualified to go through and pick 3 times. To qualify for the end of the year table you just need to come to 3 matches.

We let the top 3 shooters pick first whether they want the cash or something off the table, then it goes to lottery. My buddy Omar came to 3 matches last year and was second to last but ended up getting to pick first after the top three and got a nice Athlon scope which was a big upgrade from what he was shooting. I came in 5th overall and didn’t get to pick until last lol go figure, but I have pretty much all I needed. Did get a nice 50MOA rail from Murphy Precision for my 10/22 though so worked out great.

I ran our local 4H shooting sports club. We have trap, skeet, 22 pistol, and 22 rifle. Other clubs have additional disciplines.

He'll be with me for the April match, and probably the July match.
