We have a very intelligent and well trained Golden Retriever. What’s funny is we find ourselves sometimes spelling words out like you would with a youngster when you don’t want them to understand. Do you ever have to do the same?
To be determined

Yep. Had a Boston that understood waaaay to many human words. Smartest dog I’ve ever been around. Loved going to the bank and dry cleaners with me because they’d always give her treats. If I couldn’t take her and didn’t want her pitching a fit and crying about it, I’d have to tell the wife I was going to the B A N K.

I have an extremely smart boxer female. The stud I am having her bred to is a show boxer that can communicate using human words. He pushes a button and it says the word. His owner says he can use word correctly as appropriately. He is still young and expanding his vocabulary. His sire has about double the vocabulary.
Hoping the cross gives me pups who can just talk. LOL

Oh yeah. Cannot say "Walk" or we have to take him for one. Same with "Treats" or we have to up one. When he wants something he lets you know either vocally or by his actions. My mutt is fairly smart so far as basic stuff like; Sit, Lay Down, Shake, High Five, Play Dead get me another Beer

I had one for 13 years. She knew my commands, finger snaps, hand signals....and this was a terrier mix. Was at my side near 24/7. Say the word "go" and she'd be in the truck, mule, ranger so fast it'd make your head spin.

We have a male Rat Terrier and a female Schipperke. The Schipp is the brains. The Terrier is the braun. She maniplutaes him constantly. We have to speak in code even if she is in another room. She is extremly independent often chooses to be alone looking out a storm door or window....until time to go out, eat or grace us with her presence.
What amazes me most is her ability to calculate time desire to adhere to a schedule. She can be "on watch" in front of house and with in 10 minutes of the same time daily, come to one us for regular event. IE go out, treat, eat or bedtime.
If she was in a beauty pageant, she would win Miss Punctuality.
If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

My mutt is fairly smart so far as basic stuff like; Sit, Lay Down, Shake, High Five, Play Dead get me another Beer Great picture. We have the same system. Any word that is used as a command or activity for our dog, we have to spell out unless we want to partake in that activity with our dog. Walk, treat, food, ball, etc. We also ask him questions in full sentences, which he responds to, but I mostly think he recognized the word (like ball, when I say do you want to play ball). In the pictures of his litter he was the only one looking at the camera. He looks people in the eye when you speak to him, which I think is a good thing, as far as dog intelligence goes.
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

My dog is smart but not a genius. She can't play scrabble, read or spell. She can't speak English either - just "dog". But she can be trained to obey & perform small tasks. I tell her to go & get me a Woodford & water. She is learning, but she still puts in too much ice.

My Vizsla Dash. If he is doing something bad, I will find myself saying his full name from his registered name. "Dash --- Rip --- Rock". He knows what it means, but to him I am sure it has just become another stop it or leave it command as well as understanding the tone of voice that goes with it. It almost always does work as a one time command to stop what he is doing or obey whatever command he just ignored. I do use a lot of more human oriented commands with my dogs too, like Stop it instead of No, Wait instead of Whoa, and Give/Take instead of Drop/Hold. So commands often get put into sentences and can create some confusion if someone new is hunting with me. The truth is if you want a smart problem solving hunting dog, teach your dog to read, then give him lots of good books.

I named my dog...Dawg. Picked him up on side of road as a pup. Not sure what he is but has some hound in him. He's like 7yo now. He’s a smart azz. Nowadays he knows exactly what I’m gonna do before I do it and I really don’t have a set schedule of things I do. He’s a strange dog. Eats raw vegetables and even chunks of onion. He watches me all the time so couple years ago I changed his name to Radar. Sometimes he wants to go with me. Other times he stands on the deck like he’s flipping me off. Pretty sure he lets me live here as long as I pay the bills
