In light of recent weather events got me to thinking about things my wife and kids need to know in my absence. Such as fire escape plan, breakers on and off, water shut off, etc.. what are some other good things they should know and understand in an emergency situation around home?

How to disengage the garage door opener if power is out or there is an issue with the opener.
Funny thing about getting older:

How to safely light a gas stove when the power goes off. Most of then nowadays have igniters rather than pilot lights.
You can use an old fashioned Coleman lantern indoors for light, and a little heat, but you also need bring in some fresh air once in a while.
You can cook on a charcoal grill outdoors but don't try to heat the house with one indoors.
Small dogs make good foot warmers in a bed with six blankets/quilts on.
Lift the wiper arms on your car up if it is going to snow/sleet/freeze.
Don't drive posted speeds on roads covered with ice/snow

2) Learn how to book a flight to Cancun the day before a blizzard hits (not forgetting number 1).

You and your wife should have is knowledge about how to access bank, mortgage, credit, investment accounts, etc.. This should also include email accounts and and phone unlock codes and management accounts.
I would not suggest this info be made available to kids but they should know how to find this info in a worst case scenario
