Once it dries enough it won't matter. It will all burn. Just some better that others.

It will but Cedar elm burns like carp

If anyone wants to cut their own wood pm me, it’s free for the taking all throughout the year at different locations in NE Tx, It’s all Oak or whatever you want to cut, We will lay it on the ground and you can do your thing and we will clean up the mess. We mulch tens of thousands of nice oaks that would be great for firewood so if it helps somebody out all the better for it. I’ll even have them laid down, you de-limb them and we will drag out the logs beside your trailer. Curb service up

When I was a teen I swung a double blade axe at a fresh cut sweet gum log. It bounced right back at me and like to have split my noggin.

I just cut a 16” hunk of limb off the mystery tree and ran it through my hydraulic splitter. It did split, though not as cleanly as Oak. This afternoon I’ll burn some in an outside fire pit and see how it smells. If it smells Ok, it goes to the wood pile.

My previous fire pit experiences with elm were with Winged Elm, and it didn’t smell good when burned. My present assumption is that this is Cedar Elm, and I have no past knowledge of using it in a fire or how it smells. I will say that this is some heavy wood. Real dense.

I assume its still green? Let it dry and if it is cedar elm it will be some easy splitting stuff! Ive used cedar elm in fireplace fire rings and bbq hundreds of pounds of meat on it, it doesn't have any objectionable smell to me. Like any wood I dont cook on it or burn it green unless its just in a brush pile to get rid of though.

Pizz elm in wyoming?

In my parents acre lot growing up we had over 100 trees, mostly cedar elms. Ive cut split and burned a hell of a lot of cedar elm. Nothing about it is hard to split and I have never noticed it smelling like pizz or called a pizz elm. As i understand it is a hard wood for whatever that matters.

Yep all over eastern side of the state. Been burning some up at the ranch house, stinks like pee. American Elm is mostly what we have and it stinks when burned.

The elm I cut up split and burn has a heart almost identical to mesquite it makes a good batch of coals and puts out lots of heat. I always make sure it’s cured.
I don’t have much problem splitting it either.

I’m thinking it’s Ash.

Not ash. Ash is much more blond to white wood. Looks sweet gum. The dark heart is a dead giveaway but the bark striation is big clue also.

So does gum and extremely stringy when splitting. Burns like karp too.

You can chew the sap of a sweet gum. I looked it up for you.

"Many of the medicinal properties of sweetgum are derived from the resinous sap that exudes when the outer bark of the tree has been damaged. The sap, known as storax, has been used for centuries to treat common ailments such as skin problems, coughs, and ulcers.May"

It is a little darker than the sweetgum we have in ETX, but that doesn't mean anything as you are in a different region. If you had a sweetgum in your yard, you would know it. The star shaped leaves are a dead giveaway as well.

I lit up the mystery wood this morning. Too green to really burn, but I did generate some smoke, which did not smell bad. I think redchevy is correct in saying that Cedar Elm doesn’t smell bad when it burns. This stuff doesn’t smell as good as Oak, but it’s Ok.

My neighbors have some Live Oak down, so I’ll see what I can gather from that. If I still need firewood after that, I’ll use this stuff.
