Do propane regulators lock up? I read some conflicting info online yesterday. Our water heater has gone off twice. It lit right back up.

One thing I read said that in brutal temps, like colder than we are now at zip, that the system works better at a quarter tank or lower. I'm at 40%.

It could be due to low pressure in the tank. At 75°F the vapor pressure is 122 PISG but at 0° it is only 28 PSIG.

Put a heating blanket on the tank. That’s what we do for anhydrous ammonia.

Regulator may responding slow. L.P. systems operate at 11 inch of water column pressure. This about .5 PSI. Refering to Rabbits reply at 75 degree tank pressure is 122 PSI. So a regulator calibrated at 122 PSI probably will be out of calibration at 28 PSI.

When main burner opens, if regulator does not respond fast enough, the fuel "sees" the larger main orfice and thr pilot will be starved.

At 40 percent liquid level, the tank has less vapor capacity than at 25 pecent liqiud. Also tank capacity has some impact. Vapor regulation from 500 gallon tank is more forgiving than 250 gallon tank. A250 more 100 gallon.

At least based on my experience.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

Some Regulators can freeze up if positioned wrong and exposed to freezing precipitation(vent hole freezes over or let’s water in to freeze).

It hasn't happened again since the temp has gone up a few degrees, and rising. Oddly enough, the ice storm that is expected tonight is 20 or so degrees above the lows we've had. I can only guess for the time being that the previous freezing temps in years past weren't quite low enough for a problem.

I am by no means a propane expert but I do know very cold temps can lower pressure inside a tank. That’s why when you refill the little bottles they recommend putting them in a freezer for a few minutes before filling so you can get more in them.
