Y’all need to go check your garage freezers. They aren’t made to run in this weather. They don’t realize that they should be kicking on due to the climate being so cold. Mine, and a few others have started to thaw what’s inside.

Just an FYI.

How does that work? The inside of the freezer warms above freezing when the ambient temperature is below freezing?

Never had that happen to ours and it's always been in the garage. I'm betting it's close to zero out there right now. Not heated.
We do have ours set to -10 though.

Does this mean if it gets down to -20 it starts thawing back to -10 ?? hammer

Mine is in the laundry room. The outside wall is also the garage wall. Its the oldest appliance I own. Bought it 54 years ago when I got married.

We do have a thermo. in the freezer so now I'm going to check it throughout the day and into tomorrow and see.
Garage is insulated but not heated, I'll also check that temp, might be a little warmer than 0 in there.
Interesting as I have not seen this on our older or newer freezer but now I am curious if it happens.
Makes sense.
Also I did not know they made "garage refrigerators", made for colder garages.

Not an issue. Have the same 3 deep freezes I had in Colorado and Iowa working fine down here. They all work the same, no matter when you are at. They don’t make geographically specific freezers. You must be drinking.

Not drinking. Noticed yesterday that both of mine are thawing the meat. Each is on its own dedicated breaker, and it isn’t tripped, outlet is still working. Frozen ground meat is getting soft on the outside.

My garage is sprayed. Doors are insulated. Dogs have a doggy door and there water is near the opening and it's never frosted over. Moral of the story I don't think it will get cold enough in my garage to cause issue.

Where is the warmth coming from?

I finally bought a freezer/fridge monitor after a reading a few threads on here. Freezer reads a bit colder, fridge is about the same.

I’ve never heard of that but hell, I’ve been drinking. At least you caught it ams can keep an eye on it. Be curious to know if they work right after we warm up. 👍

BP: Is your freezer one of the newer Frost-Free ones (auto defrost)?? The way they work is to run warmer refrigerant thru the coils to melt the ice build-up. They typically do this twice a day, for 20-30 minutes. If your defrost cycle timer craps out, it could possibly not switch back to refrigerated cycle correctly

He is right, checked mine and stuff was starting to defrost. I rigged a small nightlight and attached it near the thermostat and it’s back running. Read an article that said in the late 90’s when they switched Freon this became an issue. Thanks for the heads up!
