We’ve just gotten started on the bad weather, and already the trees are covered in ice. A good bit of snapping and popping can be heard, and I suppose that’s limbs breaking off. Got a few small ones down in the yard. Our power has gone off, so the generator fired up. I should have about 24 hours of run time. When this is over, I am going for a bigger propane tank for the generator. Might as well.

The neighbors (the good neighbors) have no power or generator. I told them that they could borrow my 2200 watt Honda and an electric heater if they need it.

I’ve done all the low temp prepping I can think of, and this ain’t my first frozen rodeo, but I never had to worry about temps under 10 degrees.

Had to do all that in the sleet this morning. My trusty old Carhartt jacket let water through, so I got wet. Ordered a Yukon Extreme Carhartt jacket for the replacement.

Fireplace is in action, and I have plenty wood, I think.

I hope all of ya’ll are in good shape.

Scotch guard your old Carhartt and it’ll bead right off.

I remember several years ago we had a cold snap with a lot of rain/ice. There is a live oak limb that stretches out about 20-30 foot horizontally across the sidewalk in front of my parents house that is normally about 8-9 foot off the ground. It was weighed down to about 2-3 foot of the ground... but didn't break. Its still there a decade or two later.

'Been sleeting for hours here at the ranch. We already had a bad ice storm New Year's. There's enough down oak limbs for firewood the rest of my life. Heat lamps are set up at the well house and the pump house. Wrapped the water heater pipes in the barn 'cause y'all got me worrying about that. 'Might put a lamp on it too come Sunday. All the faucets are covered.

Went to go drain the windmill pipe and it'd already bent a sucker rod. Knew I shoulda replaced that brake. bang I'm on the repair guy's list when it warms up. Wildlife has plenty of water in the troughs from the full pila. Hope PEC keeps the juice coming.

Too dang miserable for this old man to see if anything comes to a feeder. Happy Hour will be early today. drink7

Just went wine shopping a couple days ago, so we are good in that department. The wife has made a massive pot of some sort of soup, and I managed to remember to get a few cans of Chili with beans. Yes, I am a chili with BEANS guy. Can’t help it.

Well, if we gotta all be stuck indoors for awhile we may as well have a good chili n beans debate raging along with the fire.

When we moved 11 years ago, we’d just received a record snowfall here. I want to say it was 18”. I’d sold the old house and bought this one.
We had live oak and cedar trees that were so weighted down with snow that tons of limbs started breaking.
It would sound like a 22 rifle going off.
We hauled three 22 foot trailer loads off this property.

Snow is pretty but it can be a pain in the butt.

we moved into the present home in may of 99, that winter, late dec. or maybe early jan of 2000, we had a big ice storm hit us. Within about 4 hrs the tops of big pines went to popping like shotguns. We were out of power for about 24 hrs but when we built the house we had propane firelogs , propane cook top, and propane connection for the grill on the back porch for baking biscuits. stayed warm & well fed!

I was worn slap out from another failed winterizing project when I read this. So....for the generator off I go to buy another 5 gallon gas can---$40 at Lowes. Go fill it up with corn free gas and top off the other. While at it go ahead and go get a bottle of propane......four stops to find one. I seriously doubt I need the extra jug of propane, but what the heck...I was on a roll...it doesn't spoil.

I just know my road is lined with dead trees and I can't be alone in that department. I remember hearing about some folks in Red River county going without power a looonnngggg time in about 1997 or so? after an ice storm.

You might as well order an electric/battery pole saw. It took me 4 days to trim and clean up my trees after our last ice storm.

I hate to see the mess in the morning. There are two roads to get here from a main road, and I just heard there was a huge one down on the primary road. Probably the other one is blocked now.

Huge limbs down in the yard from my Bois D’Arc tree and others. My fence lines are probably history. Lord, what a mess.

Mr Stihl and I will be busy for days, if not weeks.

On this place, I am The Man. Good news, bad news...
