A point made in the past when there was talk of drastically increasing the minimum wage is the impact it could have on customer tipping. More specifically, some have claimed that customers will not tip as much or even at all when they know the waiter or waitress is making a lot more than they did in the past. As a result, these workers may actually earn less since tips can easily add up to several times the hourly wage. To combat this, the next logical step could be adding an additional 15 to 20% to ALL checks without any regard to the quality of the service received, replacing the current practice that only does this for groups of eight or more.

Yes, the cost of eating out may soon take a sharp upswing with restaurant owners increasing prices to cover their costs and tips being automatically added to your check.

One of our favorite restaurants nearby has gone to that. It makes it seamless and we don't think about it anymore. When everything went into lockdown, we were ordering in and wasn't even aware of it until one meal we ordered wine and I was like, man, that seems a bit expensive and actually looked at the receipt. Each time we were paying them tip in cash and we learned they were also adding it to the bill. It seems to be working for them and I don't see any slow down in their business.

Somebody better tell me that up front.

Anyone automatically adding my tip in can kiss my business goodbye. A tip is something that’s earned not a right of passage, the country’s going to complete [censored] and everyone’s owed something.. Freaking joke..

Hate it. Most places I've gone to that automatically added the tip on larger parties had worse service than places that don't do it. Especially places that try to say a large party is 6 people or more. For me, adding that 15% auto-tip makes them get less than I would normally give. Especially for decent service on a large party. I normally tip 20% for decent service on a large party and have gone as high as 50% for really good service.

Simple cure, don't eat out!!

The cost of eating out has already skyrocketed...The wife and I are creatures of habit. If we go to a familiar restaurant, there is a good chance we will order the same thing had last time. Looking over my annual CC statement, it was easy to see that the average cost is increased between 20 - 30% at most of the places we go. Or favorite pizza place has consistently done MORE business than they were doing prior to Covid, but like every other eatery in the area, the took the excuse to raise prices.

If prices take another jump to cover higher hourly salary for the staff, I can assure you I will be among those that stop tipping.

Had a suggested tip at a place where you order at the counter, pre-pay, get your own drink, clean up your trash & such. Was so afraid if I did not tip, the cook would spit in my food. Great burger. Never been back. Likely never will.

Several of the places we eat at have started adding a tip on to go orders. Not a big fan.

One of my favorites, i picked up food for the family a while back ordered to go, they had it out fast, I added a tip on. Checked the CC bill and they did not charge the tip, just the bill amount.

I have not experienced this, other than on a large party. I normally tip 15 to 20 percent, unless the service is just abysmal and even then, I still tip 10%. If it's a place I frequent it's usually 25% to 30%...and the waitstaff knows this and treats me well; usually meeting me at the table with my drink before I'm seated.

Had it requested when buying chicken. A place called The Chicken Ranch south of Austin. Marvin Zendler recommended it.

Yup....ate breakfast at a little cafe and my ticket had a $1 ToGo charge but I ordered and ate in the cafe....hand written receipt.

Didn’t leave a tip. Was going to tip well until I saw that...pizzed me off.

I’m pretty sure that restaurant workers will not be subject to the $15 minimum wage just as they are not subject to the current minimum wage. Their minimum wage is much lower precisely because their primary income source is tips.

The new thing around here is going to pick up to go orders and them just keeping your change without ever saying anything. I’ve let more than one individual get blasted over that crap. I will gladly tip 25% plus in most cases but don’t allow me to make the call and your not getting a dime.

I remember that place.

I had it happen at a restaurant in Keller years ago. I was not told up front about it and only found out after looking at the receipt. I spoke with the manager about it and eventually they removed the tip- I said I tip based on service-not because I have too. I never went back after that. As one previous said-let me make the call on the tip since it is my $$$ being spent. I won't go to a place that has an automatic tip added.
