Springfield armory range officer line and the Ruger are about as budget friendly as any. I have both of these guns and favor the Ruger.

I actually have all of these pistols including a few STI’s which if your open to a used single stack if you can find one is also an incredible value and is fit and has the feel that the slide is literally sitting on ball bearings. Also a bonus it is made in Texas!

Colts retain value exceptionally well which is another good reason I rank it number one.

I have the STI Shadow in 9mm...excellent single stack CC gun.

I have a Colt Goldcup that would be my goto since it's became my buddy over the years of range time.My Springfield milspec has been a good shooter but I just havn't shot it as much.Neither has given me any problems and I would buy either brand again.

The best bang for the buck Dan Wesson in my opinion, is the Vigil. You can get it in both commander and full size as well as CCO - in .45 or 9mm. It's a damn fine pistol - I have the .45 CCO (Concealed Carry Officer - Officer Frame with Commander Slide). In my personal opinion the CCO is the best carry size 1911. These guns can be found for $1,100 NEW.

This is where I bought mine (currently out):

TXGunner308 - is there a particular model Dan Wesson that's a best "value", or are they mostly made the same quality-wise but just different finishes/features.

They are great 1911s and can usually be had in the $1000 range or lower. I just have never gotten over the external extractor. I know there's nothing wrong with it but I like them the way Browning designed them. Stil, the Nightmare in particular is a great gun - and if you like to make a statement there is none better than the Molon Labe.

My only complaint with the sig 1911s is the slide profile. They wont fit some of the standard 1911 holsters.

I had no idea - that's really unfortunate

I own two 1911’s in that price range. A Colt government and a springfield mil-spec. Not a minutes problem out of either pistol. For the money both are pretty good. I would not hesitate to buy either. I wanted to like the Colt better but I actually prefer shooting the Springfield. Resale on the Colt is higher but I did not buy either with the intention to resell.

Less than $1000 new. If you can stand Kahr and you can stomach the Slide Billboard the Magnum Research DE1911GSS. Only one that I know of south of a $1000 with a Checkered Front Strap. Otherwise I would look at a Ruger.

I've only owned 2 1911's, a stock Colt and a Dan Wesson CBOB...the Dan Wesson is the only pistol i've ever regretted selling! It was a sweet shooter but just too nice for me to carry and i couldn't afford a $1200 trophy in the safe at the time...dangit!!! Now i wanna buy another!!haha

I have had several over the years.
Remington R1 surprised me at how good it was.
have had a couple of RIA pistols ...Fantastic value for the dollar.
I recently shot a DW and was knocked out. If you got the coin this is top shelf
worst I ever owned was Springfield carry model ...would have had a hard time hitting a barn from the inside...

Great thread going here. I'm in the market for a 1911, seems about the worst time to be in the market. Anybody got any good shops in Texas they recommend for the middle range? Just about everywhere seems backordered on anything except the low-end options.

Save a little (a lot) more get the Dan Wesson Specialist. The only gun I have bought and NOT sold and don't intend too. Mines a 9mm, full size with laser

Colt lightweight Commander in 45 or 38 super.
I’ve had one of the above either on my hip or within arms reach for 40ish years now.
I own other brands , but have faith in my Colts.

I've shot them all over 35 years.....my advice is don't be a brand nazi....get good value from an all steel name brand and go shoot...a mil spec SA my son in law got for 600 ish out the door shoots as good as most people can hold....I cleaned up the trigger, made sure extractor tension was right and hook contact was good.....he's shot 2500 rounds so far without an issue. This is my old duty gun that just had a full rebuild by a master...it was a SA custom shop gun I bought in 1990. [Linked Image]

So 600.....or 5k......it's the Indian that kills you, never the arrow
