Avalanches have always fascinated me. Always got warnings in my younger days for skiing crazy stuff, I'm probably lucky to be alive. Just saw this video, 1:12 into it he drops in and sets it off. I have been in many top layer slides, but when the whole thing goes, that is bad.

I have no plans on ever seeing an avalanche in real life.

Bet thats a tough way to die. Think about it being buried under a bunch of snow slowly freezing to death. You have just rolled down a mountain side in an avalanche buried under who knows how much snow maybe barely conscious, if you can move at all which way is up? If one does die that way hopefully they are knocked unconscious on the way down.

I would think if the blunt trauma didn't kill you, you'd suffocate.

That's how you go. You can't clear breathing room in front of your face with your arms trapped in who knows what position.

I ski but I don't do back country skiing! I'm perfectly happy on groomed slopes. The little bit of powder skiing I've done, was fresh powder on top of a groomed slope, knee deep at the deepest.

Their have been multiple avalanches since the original post.

Deadly string of avalanches coincides with ripe weather conditions and increased backcountry use, experts say
Quote
Sixteen people have died across the U.S. from avalanches in less than two weeks, a stunning number that experts say is largely due to conditions ripe for the deadly snowslides and may be connected to increased use of the backcountry during the pandemic.

Deaths in Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, California, Alaska, Washington and New Hampshire are the result of the weak snowpacks that formed in the beginning of winter, said experts at the U.S. Forest Service's National Avalanche Center.

Yep, conditions are very bad right now in backcountry. Many folks trapped and some killed , skiers and snow machiners.
Even our mountains had a slide last week that nearly caught some snow sledders. Rescues too due to getting lost in deep powder.
Tons of new snow just this past week, great for skiing and sledding but be very careful.
