Figured this is the place to ask. Grass fed vs. corn fed?
We tried Burgandy Beef grass fed ground meat once and hated it. It seems as if we’re corn fed beef lovers all the way.
My question is does grass fed beef that’s finished on corn taste the same as what people call “corn fed” beef or is it the same thing. I only buy choice and occasionally prime. Don’t care about the super high end stuff. Thanks guys.

It depends on how long it was fed out. I don't care for straight grass fed beef. It's too lean for me.

This. Beef that’s been on grass all it’s life and given 30-45 days of corn will taste much different than beef that hit the feedlot while there was milk on its lips.

That's about what we did when I was growing up. Don't remember how they tasted. My momma pounded out the. T-bones and chicken fried them.

It's like anything that's fed, wild or domestic. Longer it's on fed better taste and marbling.

As a base line feed lot is 120 days. Most don't see much more unless they are waiting out withdrawal periods. With that said I’ve gone much longer, difference being we owned feedlot, So my costs weren't much of a consideration

There’s an art to achieving top quality beef, finished on grass.
This is not your pasture cow or calf, it’s highly specialized and, when done correctly, produces some excellent beef that is equal and in some cases superior to grain fed beef.

However, day in and day out, I’d stay with Choice or higher - Prime when possible, grain fed beef.

Consistently excellent.

Check out Bearded Butchers on YouTube they did a comparison on grass fed versus grain fed.

My grandparents always pulled a 4-500lb calf straight off the cow and processed it wasn’t bad eating but they never grilled steaks. They always simmered in gravy or stew until tender
I have done both fed them out and butchered straight off the cow
I prefer grain fed for grilling

It was chicken fried for me.

Growing up, all we ever had was grass fed. We would literally pick one out of the pasture and haul it straight to the processor. Since becoming an adult, I would say that corn fed definitely has better flavor to me than most grass fed steaks.

My great grandfather always kept a couple of jersey cows and would breed them to his Angus or whatever kinda bulls he was running at the time and the calves were butchered every year and were hands down the best steaks I have ever had he always said it was the milk off those jersey momma cows that made the difference and I don't doubt that one bit

This is true. Most people don't really know what a "finished" steer should look like, and to finish them on grass only takes alot of time, patience, and knowledge. I've had some excellent grass fed beef and I've had some tough as shoe leather.

I currently have 3 almost yearling steers that have been on nothing but grass their entire lives. I was planning on finishing one on grass and one on corn and doing a sampling for people to see what they like. But with processing plants being booked a year out I think I'm probably going to have to just sell them.

About to put a couple calves on my Cousin's place. Gonna do my own butchering when the time comes. Have everything we need except for a walk in cooler to age them. Gotta build one.

Upping genetics to get grass feed to grade out choice (at best) is just tattooing lip stick on a pig.

Grass fed beef makes good taco’s, stew and chicken fried steak, and steaks....... for when your mother in law comes over.

I've eaten Strips and Rib eyes that would make you change your mind.
Like I said, there's an art to it and some of these growers know how.

Mine are pasture raised then finished in a lot with Steer Finisher for 45 days. I've had plenty of customers and no issues with flavor.

I have 3 steers going to Hess in Munster June 10th. I'll post up in April if anyone is interested. I'll be selling whole and 1/2 beef.
