Wow..I bet since you "picked" it up you got it for a song and a dance...most people typically see Grade 1's and 2's...those are $700-$1k. Value goes up with the grade. A grade IV is one grade below their highest grade (V)...I'm only guessing at value here but probably $3-4k based on what I see on closed auctions on Gun Broker.

Very nice! But who buys a gun, mounts the scope and never sights it in! Not calling you out, just curious about the story behind the gun. Reminds me of a previous post from long ago on here, guy selling a gun with a scope on it, says NIB shoots 1/2 inch groups. How would you know if you didn't shoot it?

Either way that's a beautiful rifle, almost too beautiful to hunt with! Merry Christmas to you!

Thanks for replies guys.

Regarding the "never fired", Just going by what the gentleman told me who I bought it from. Yes a scope on a gun gave me pause in believing it . The chamber area looks pristine.....................who knows, I guess a gunsmith or someone who knows guns better than I could verify it.

Thanks again, Merry Christmas !

I have several guns with scopes mounted that have never been shot. They still have the factory stickers on them.

You might want to hang onto that one.

I question the scope and never been shot my self

But...I know for a fact my FIL bought a mint 788 maybe 10 years ago

Mounted a scope and hasn’t fired a round out of it

I’ve offered more times than I can count to sight it in

I had a senior member at another gun site say its worth was around $6-8K. I have no idea but I do know its worth more than what I paid for it smile I am not a hunter. I own several guns for home and self defense but when I saw this for sale I had to get it. I drove 24hrs the next day to purchase it.

I'd sell it to him then. There was one on GB that was still in the box for $4,500. GB prices are max prices, what one can hope to get if they list a firearm there to a national audience. It is my repeated experience that there is a vast difference between GB prices and what you can expect to sell something for locally.

It's worth noting that it did not sell at that price and has been relisted again for a higher price (go figure).

I agree Earl, that's why I am asking around. Thank You. I don't plan to sell it. Its a very pretty rifle and even has the engravers name etched into the receiver.

Thumper, from reading over the last week, this gun cost around $700.00 New in 1973. I do find it hard to believe that it is only worth $2-3k by some peoples opinion. I think you are spot on. Its only worth what a buyer is willing to pay. Thank yall for all your responses.

I have my grandfathers 1957 Browning Sweet Sixteen and matching Auto 5 12 gauge that would have to be pried from my cold dead fingers, I’m shocked when family’s sell off relatives firearms but not surprised anymore.

Very common 'back in the day' for scopes to be mounted and sighted in by use of a Collimator (pre-laser bore sighting).

I find it very plausible that a scope was mounted and the rifle never shot.

It's also possible the scope was added many years later with the intent of sighting in....and it just never happened. We just don't know, but the idea that a scope mounted on an absolutely pristine rifle MUST mean it was shot.....is folly IMO.

Awesome beautiful rifle, congrats.

To me that is the ugliest scope, I would remove that ASAP.
