Day one from the stand. Found a nice little spot during the scouting days with lots of deer sign. Fingers crossed! Area 1-1

Adchunts, I hope you had better luck than I did. I did sits at 2 different places I found scouting that looked promising with intersecting trails and lots of fresh sign, but we didn't see a deer or pig in 3 days. Talked to a couple of other hunters in unit 1-3 and they hadn't seen anything either. I know there are deer there, because I saw some when doing the scouting trip, they just did a great job of social distancing this weekend. Despite the poor results, I would like the change to hunt here again. Got to bring along my daughter as my non-hunting guest and she had a great time and helped me pack a bunch of gear around. The place I sat Friday evening and Saturday morning. How most of my area of the unit looked. Doing some mid-day still hunting. The spot we moved to that looked promising. It again had several intersecting trails and fresh sign, but nothing presented itself. My hunting parter fell asleep on me at one point. Even coming home empty handed, I wouldn't trade the time with my oldest for the world. It was her 1st time expressing interest in hunting and now wants to learn to shoot so she can hunt herself, so it was time well spent.

I did manage to shoot a spike on Sunday morning. It was the only four legged critter I saw all weekend. We did do some mid-day walking on Saturday through the most remote part of our area. Tons of deer, hog, and coyote sign.
It didn’t help that the adjoining private property was doing some major land clearing work, complete with heavy equipment running most of the day on Saturday.
The deer I shot caught me by surprise. I honestly did not expect anything to show after no movement on Friday and Saturday. Was going to give it until about noon, and pack up for the four hour drive home. Had a ladder stand placed on one side of a large field, and the deer popped out on the other side about 7:30 AM. Took a few minutes to get a shot, as I had trouble finding a hole through the brush. I didn’t do a good a job finding a hole, as the first shot never made it to the deer. Deer ran around confused for a few seconds, and then made the mistake of running out into the wide open to stop and look around. High shoulder shot and dropped like a rock. Shot was right at 150 yards.

By buddy and I hunted section 1-4 this weekend. Saw lots of hog and deer sign, but few animals (3-4 deer and one hog). Never got off a shot.
There were 4 other hunters in the compartment. 1 guy got a deer Sunday morning. The others didn't see a thing.

WORST. PUBLIC. HUNT. EVER.
Saw one animal the whole weekend and that was a spike that moved through very fast with no shot opportunity! Feel like I wasted money, time, vacation time and my PP that I would've much rather gone to Laguna Atascosa with! Lesson learned this year!

thanks! my small place I own is surrounded on 3 sides by the NWR ... and I have it under a wildlife improvement exemption, we have just started to see deer and turkey numbers increase following the drought back in 2011-2013, hogs are prolificate and a nuisance that we kill on sight, trap, etc. There are hog trails leading to my ranch that look like super highways ... LOL
