Guy walked right up to me about a week ago while I was trimming my hedges. Evidently our neighborhood herd has an abundance of this abnormality present.

Pretty cool. Never seen a dark one like that. My younger brother has a 'piebald' that walks through their yard fairly often....just across the Lake from you in Point Venture.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

My FIL has one mounted that he shot in Hays county years ago. I've seen one that was hit on 32 near the Devils backbone. Evidently they are not uncommon in Hays and parts of Comal counties.

Beautiful animal for sure!
My good friend killed one several years ago on his family farm near Cibolo that had 11 points and was probably 135". It was an old deer and apparently did his job because they had several more of them in the years following.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I've been hunting deer since about 1975. I've never seen or even heard of something like this. Thanks for posting. Incredible picture. Closest I've come was I was playing in a golf tournament in Council Bluffs Iowa. Young back then. Heavy night of drinking in Omaha the night before. As I'm tying on my golf shoes in parking lot I see a black squirrel. I've never seen a black squirrel Walking to clubhouse I swore I would never drink again or even tell the story. As we played the round I found out that black is the predominate color of squirrels in Council Bluffs. They were all over the golf course that day. Been that way for years. Black Deer? Fantastic.

I shot one in Hays county back in the late 80’s. Took the hide to taxidermist to get tanned. The hide returned wasn’t the melanistic hide I had given them, just a normal wt hide. Grrrrrr.

My FIL has one mounted that he shot in Hays county years ago. I've seen one that was hit on 32 near the Devils backbone. Evidently they are not uncommon in Hays and parts of Comal counties. They are not uncommon in Hays, Comal, some parts of Kendall and Guadalupe. I've seen 2, one in Bulverde ( neighborhood deer ) and one south of Boerne. Friend of ours shot one very similar to the one you posted last year in Garden Ridge off 3009. They are the rarest of the color phases but they are not ultra rare in those pocket areas. Think of it like the Albino herds they have running around up North
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Beautiful deer for sure. We have some bucks and does this color in Harrison county. They sure do stand out from the rest of the herd.

Thanks folks for the warm welcome. I moved back to Texas from NYC about a year ago and it’s been great to hunt down here. When I first saw this Buck I immediately thought how cool he’d be as a mount but when I learned more about Melanistic deer and how rare they are I thought differently. Anyhow, there’s a few more of these (doe) in the neighborhood as well. Here’s a little guy I took in Williamson county a few weeks ago. Not too proud of it but there hasn’t been any big bucks around this season.
