I'm a little over 1 mile away from a busy FM Road, so i hear 18 wheelers quite often and the sound of traffic early mornings and evenings. other than it's birds chirping and squirrels barking, occasionally a pig squealing.

Our stands, we spot and stalk in open country, are usually little spots out of the wind . We use trees and rock outcroppings for cover to spot at distances and then move in. The highway is well below us and about 1-2 miles away so occasionally a truck pulling a load is heard. The wind dominates up here. Aircraft are kind of rare but mostly small private planes and helicopters. Used to get a-holes from FE Warren that liked to use the high areas over private for low training runs . They loved to spot and spook the elk herds in their helicopters, thankfully G&F put stop to that several years ago. Birds of prey, ravens and coyotes are about all we hear. A distant gun shot on occasion as well. The wind is always blowing though, when it's not it's pretty quiet.

This week, aside from the semi-frequent rifle shots, I only heard birds.
That's the way I like it

Years ago in college I was invited as a guest to one of my friends father's hunting club back in Louisiana. They set me up in a stand and told me they'd pick me up at 10AM. Around sunrise I began to hear elephants trumpeting...a little later it sounded like zebras laughing...then the cherry on top was a damn lion roaring. I was quite surprised when damn near the entire lodge showed up to pick me up. They immediately began to grill me if I saw or heard anything...I emphatically stated..."no...not a thing" for fear of being thought crazy. They kept after me and I finally said "I heard a damn elephant and a lion" and the entire group busted out laughing.
Turns out the lease butts up to a safari game preserve they let people ride through and feed the animals and this stand is were they play jokes on newbies. Great memory.

I was at the intersection of 2 FM roads for 8 years. Had half a section to myself and could get away from it but I still heard all the rock and gas trucks etc. Lost that place and now am on a place truly secluded. God it is so much quieter and nicer. Thought I would miss the place but don't a bit. Love the sound of sparrow hawks and nighthawks. Pigs squealing and even the dang sandhills. It's all good.

I've heard just about everything imaginable over the last 55+ years of hunting. A couple that stand out as being odd more than the others.
hunting in a pop up ground blind in the panhandle early one morning, like an hour plus before shooting light. I started hearing footsteps getting closer and closer, then I could tell it was multiple animals, pitch black when a pack of coyotes went to yipping and howling all around the blind, made the hair on the back of my neck stand up indeed since they were within feet of me.
another was a couple of years ago on my East Texas place in Freestone county along the Trinity river, I was in a newly built stand that was about 10' high when I started hearing some odd noise, loud grunting or croaking but not hogs. I wasn't sure what it was for a while and couldn't imagine what was making this sound. I texted with the adjoining lease manager who informed me there were several large alligators in the "duck pond" that split the properties and I was only a few hundred yards from it, so I guess it was alligator(s).
also one night while headlighting varmints on the Llano river just east of Llano with my uncle ... he wasn't scared of anything and when we heard this horrible screeching sound, very close, he said it was time for us to hot foot it back to his car about 2 miles away. Of course that kinda unnerved me since he seemed pretty fidgety. After getting to the car, he said it was either a bobcat or mountain lion, but he didn't want to come face to face with either carrying a single shot 22 and a dim 6 volt headlamp.

Last weekend it was a jackhammer. Or maybe a woodpecker hammering on the side of my blind. He had no idea how close he came to death that morning.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

Our place now backs up to part of Ft Hood. So we hear a lot of shooting and bombing. Kind of tune it out now and don't notice it really. The animals pay it no kind at all. Fun seeing the helicopters fly over low.
