I was out at my ranch property this past week end had a bit of bait set out. I had a dog come up to my bait Pyle , this dog had mange worse than any animal I have ever seen. I must say I had the thought to put this pitful dog out of his abused and sad situation however he posed no threat by his actions and I just let him eat and go on. It breaks my heart to see this but I think that particular dog would had been better off.

Feral dogs can be a severe menace to livestock and poultry. Don't be surprised if he doesn't show up with some of his buddies next time! Many ranchers advocate killing them, for they know the potential damages that they will cause.

Don't hesitate next time..........

In the shape you say he was in I would have ended his suffering. If I come across a dog on my place (with a collar) I try and find out who's it is and resolve the problem. No collar =DRT.

I hunted a place that had a severe dog problem in that you could hear the pack running through the canyons chasing deer, and eventually they would get closer and here would come the deer running with tongue hanging out and shortly behind six dogs hot on it's heels.

I had even been out feeding and came up on the pack and had them stand their ground and growl at me.

I'm not going to say what I did or what I would or wouldn't do but I no longer hunt there, and I love dogs, but once they get the taste for running deer and other livestock they become a whole other problem that can only be dealt with in most cases by lethal means.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I would have called to the dog, and see how he responded, wagging it's tail or looking aggressive is the way I would have handled it.

Chances are he is not the only one, and it's when they roam in packs is when they become a problem.

People drop off dogs, and occassionally you'll find one loner that with a little TLC could make someone a nice pet, but usually it's not the case once they become feral.

even old yeller had to be shot in the end...

in all seriousness though, i would look for a collar, whistle to him and if he stayed clear and looked that bad, that would probably be a good signal to take him out.
but, this question is not the same for all of use since my place is so far off the main road, a dog is way out of its element. to others, they may have residences within a mile or so...

Stuff my dad said in the deer blind

"I can dive deeper and come up drier"
"did you do that?"

Domestic animals have no place in the wild, period. You should be able to tell the difference between a stray and someones pet. Next time do the poor dog a favor and put him down.

And even if the dog you are talking about was someones pet, and it looked that bad, you would still be doing the dog a favor.

I've lived in rural areas my whole life and it pisses me off to see people from town hauling off pets they don't want anymore. If I see them, they get put down fast and humane. No suffering, starving, cuts and infected sores. A .22 short can sometimes be their best friend. JMO

He would have been much better off with a high dose of lead.

I have had dogs go past my deer stand before, some mangy, some not. Good or bad, I personally have a hard time shooting any dog.

alright rifleman, tell me if u would have acted in the same way that tihs man did in my situation.

when i was about 12 yrs old, we were working cattle, as we were bringing the cattle along a fence line, we had probably 10 or 11 dogs running around bunching the cattle, ONE of the dogs crossed the fence into the mans pasture. and just a bout 20yrds inside the mans fence. we hollered at the dog. the man stepped out and shot our dog with about 10 people sitting there watching him. it was my great uncles dog (or maybe one of his sons, dont member) the man that shot our dog is about 6'6'' and over 300lbs. my great uncle about 5'9 and maybe 200lbs got right up in his face... maddest ive ever seen him.... so are u tellin me that in a situation like that, u wouldve shot the dog like that jackass did?

to the ranchers I know, a wild dog is more dangerous than a coyote. And most on here would shoot a coyote dead in a heartbeat.

Brandon, your story is a bit different than most, and that guy would have gotten what he had coming to him had he done that around me. But thats not a wild dog, thats a pet.

As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind...Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks--Thomas Jefferson

do u really think the dogs are running ur deer that hard??? most of em are just running around chasin rabbits everynow and then, i see dogs every yr while deer hunting, i put the crosss hairs on em and then think..... i bet those are some lil girls puppies..... ill let em pass.i mean it sounds like we have a bunch of d-bags that just want to hunt dogs....

heres another question to stir the pot with. kinda OT. what if ur neighbors cow came in and started scarin off the deer??? would u shoot it then cuz u didnt spend all ur money and time on feeding deer to have a cow come eat it all and scare off the deer....

Boooom! If they are responsible owners the dog will not be roaming looking for food. I know the Game Warden in the area I hunt feels the same way based off the conversation we had last year about dogs chasing deer through our hunting set up.
