All right, now that you got a good laugh at my classified post, I'm looking for suggestions on a scope to put on my BAR. I am contemplating a Leopold vx3, but would consider a lower priced scope as long as I am not sacrificing glass quality. I don't want to go all out with a $1000 scope, but here is what I do want. GOOD GLASS. I want it to be somewhat glare resistant, and work well in low light. Simple duplex reticle. 3-9 variable, or something in that realm.

I would very highly recommend one of these 2-10s. Far superior to the VX-3 as far as glass quality.

Meopta Meopro 3-9. I would talk to Doug at Camera Land for a deal.

SWFA 3-9 HD has good glass and great turrets. Usually a good Black Friday sale.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

I'd probably look at Meopta or perhaps a Zeiss Conquest, myself. I've got a number of Meopta scopes, and the most basic 3-9x Zeiss Conquest, and have been quite happy with all of them. I'd consider Steiner as well, if you can find the right deal.

I have considered Burris. I have a Veracity on my Rem 788, and it is fantastic...but it is big and heavy. Clunky would be a good description of it. In order to get the 1" tube, I would have to go down to the Fullfield. Would you recommend the Burris Fullfield over the vx-3i? If so, I would consider it. I like Burris.

To meet the excellent glass needs Camera Land has the Meopta 6x42 on sale for $399. Hell of a scope and $200 off.

I would have to get them both outside and have a look, to make that call. Probably what you should do as well. They are probably both really good scopes. Scopes that would be insane nice 30 years ago.

Not the same BAR, Buzz, and I think at least one of his automatic weapons was a Colt Monitor, mostly identical to the BAR.
I have a couple of Burris FFII 4.5-14 scopes in use and a couple of Leupold VX3 4.5-14 scopes. For a set and forget scope, they both work very well. They hold POI. Both have good glass, and both are light. I’ll say that the Burris scopes are a bit more basic, but that isn’t a knock on the scope at all. When I bought the first FFII I was so pleased at the quality, I bought a second one.
I had a straight 6 power Leupold on the BAR for a number of years. It was never a problem, and I killed a bunch of deer. Longest shot was 365 yards. You could get by with a straight 6 power, but I do prefer 4-16 or 4.5-14 these days.

I turned down a deal at Academy today. They have the Burris 4.5-14 with the E1 reticle and side focus, paired with a 3-9x40 FFII. It’s regularly $379, the combo was on clearance today at $286. I was impressed with the clarity of the bigger scope but had no use for the little one so I passed.

Leupold has let me down lately. I can't speak to their VX5 and above but VX3 and below aren't very good anymore IMO. I'd like to keep supporting them as a former fanboy but realized companies change and Leupold was just throwing out optic lines in every conceivable niche. Very similar to how Vortex ruined their reputation. I'd put Leupold above Vortex but personally wouldn't buy either. Prolly get flamed but that is just my humble opinion.

Leupold is still riding their rep from days past. Other than MK 5, 6, or 8 and there high end vx counterparts, which are over priced imo. There scopes are unimpressive these days. All I shoot is FFP now but if I was to get a SFP all I would consider is a Sightron. Japanese glass that is very good and great CS.

Given the choice between the Burris 4.5-14 and the Leupold, if cost wasn’t a consideration, I’d get the Leupold. I have two of the Leupold (and two of the Burris). One of the Leupold scopes is a VariX-III from the 80’s or 90’s, and it has never been anything but perfect. A year or two ago I sent it back for a new reticle, and when Leupold had it they refurbed it at no extra cost to me. They did the same for a VariX-III 6.5-20 when I had that reticle changed.
I have had one Leupold scope fail, though it failed in my brother’s closet and not in the field. It was a M8 6 power, and a lens came loose inside. I had bought it at a gun show back in the 80’s, and it was a used scope. So, it died after 40+ years. I sent it back and they promptly sent me a brand new, in the box and shrink wrapped, 6 power.

My buddy had the same issue with his last 2 scopes. Probably less of an issue if you don't get their CDS. I also had my VXRs start dropping trim which never happened on any scope. My VXR Patrol had the Leupold emblem fall off on the fire dot button the first range session. 2 years later the button got stuck and Leupold sent me a new one. The rubber trim on the eye piece of my VXR 2-7 fell off somewhere in the field. Leupold fixed everything except the eyepiece rubber. I never bothered to send it back for that since it functions. I'd rather not have the hassle of warranty work.

The 5 & 6 run a different erector system. It’s two springs instead of one. They advertised it when they were first introduced, then they went silent about it. I think they realized they were acknowledging the faulty system they were running on everything else. I think at the least anything they have with an exposed turret should have the new system. Apparently they don’t agree as they keep churning out lesser CDS with the old erector.
Edit: I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another 5 or 6HD today. Preferably a 5. If they would have had the one in stock I wanted the day I bought the 6 I would have never spent the extra hundreds the 6 cost.

Even the defunct $200 Weaver classics work great. Be nice if Bushnell would dust off that those Japanese models since they took over Weaver.

The erector springs were part of what Leupold changed out on my old VariX-III 4.5-14, but the scope hadn’t been giving me any issues for the nearly 40 years I had it and used it. Same with the old 6.5-20. I suppose a factor in that long life could have been that they were set-and-forget scopes, so none of the scope guts got overworked. I’ll imagine that a non-CDS VX3 will last as long as mine did. And even if it is a CDS scope, I wouldn’t think a hunter is going to overwork it anyway, unless he might be a prairie dog shooter. I sure don’t.
