Need some help with this. I’ve never done any refinishing but this thing is in bad shape and it needs to be done. Ideally I wouldn’t need to take it down so I can keep the damn flies out of the house. Anyone here done this before? Please post advice or how to do this correctly and make it last. The door faces south so it gets a lot of sun and wind.

You gotta take it down and staple up some plastic. Put the door on sawhorses and strip it. (Just read the instructions on the can of stripper and buy the scrapers, etc.) Apply Linseed oil or have Home Depot order Watco outdoor oil and put on that.'May take two or three applications, throughout the day. Rehang door. This involves no varnish. 'Not a fan of varnish. But, this is what I like. You gotta do it every few years the way you house is facing. Or, just move. And Bill's right. His front door is awful. (Sneaky devil deleted his post 'fore I was finished typing. )

watco danish oil rub is some great stuff or you can use valspar marine polyurethane (my preference) for a more lasting finish.
the valspar has good uv resistance since it is the marine type.

I have used all three.
Watco oil will soak in. Recoat as needed. User friendly. Varnish is good, you can get satin or gloss finish. Durable and easy to recoat when needed. Poly is a plastic coat. Extremly durable, but must be sanded off to when need to refinish.
I would probably go with Watco oil. It would be better for wood. If you are not happy with finish, you can varnish or poly later.
In event, plastic drop cloth and green or blue masking tape will keep critters out.
You tube search will help you. Each of these are applied differently, at least I use different type brushes and techniques.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

The Watco Teal Oil is an outdoor version of the Watco Danish Oil, the former has UV protectants, the Danish does not. With either of these it is better to allow to dry overnight before apply another coat.

that looks great!
angus1956, I doubt I could afford the travel expense down to where I am located ... can you tell us what she used after stripping? was it the Watco oil?
I have done ours several times over the years and always left it intact to do all the stripping/sanding, then back with something like the stain/oil and apply several coats over a couple of days. The stripping is the most work as I always do it totally by hand with sandpaper & sanding block.

PMK, my wife is an artist but won't admit it. Here's what she told me. 1. Prep and tape off door as needed 2. Remove weather stripping 3. Lightly sand and repair as needed. 4. She uses acrylic paint/colors to match existing color. 5. Spray/seal with a product called "Afixative" it will protect color from coming off. 6. Apply 1 coat Man o war Spar Varnish 7. Let dry 1 day and lightly sand. 8. Wipe off sanding dust 9.Apply second coat of Man o war spar varnish. 10. Replace weather stripping. DONE!
