That's what I read, anyway. A taste between turkey and pork. That sounds good until you realize a nutria is a very large rat. But I digress My cousin told me that when he was fishing in my lake, he saw three Nutria. One was sharing a stump sticking up out of the lake with a turtle. When it comes to beaver and nutria, I would give them names and feed them, except they burrow into dams and cause them to fail, and I can't have that. So yesterday, I set up my Sniper Seat 360 in the shade of a tree and did not have to wait long. Darn if a nutria didn't climb up on a stump with a turtle. I rolled the Redfield Revolution up to 7X and could see his wet fur bristling in the sun. The Mapulator app had plotted the range at only 90 yards, so there was no need for the bullet drop compensating feature on the Accu Range reticle. Breath control, a steady hold and a press of the trigger delivered the Hornady Superformance .243, 58 grain pill at 3,925 fps. Well, not that fast from my 16 inch Ruger American Compact. An explosion of mist from the soggy rat suggested a solid hit. He surfaced briefly, drifted slowly a few feet and sank. A couple of years ago on another pond, I got a double on beavers from that Sniper Seat. Beavers mate for life and the male beaver swam over to the female I had shot and began carrying her lifeless body back across the lake. It was heartbreaking, but at least they died together. Now, another nutria swam from their den in the dam to look for brother rat. Shot at that one but pretty sure I missed. Insert alibi: At that distance a swimming target smaller than a biscuit edgewise isn't easy to hit. Yet another nutria swims from the den. This one bucked and then floated. By and by, something is moving through the reeds toward the floater. Probably the one I had missed earlier but this time is halfway up out of the water in the reeds, broadside to me and moving very slowly. Jumped and then sank slowly into the reeds. I stuck around for another hour or so and checked the lake again this morning. All three in that little family must have met their demise. RIP my furry friends.

Has anyone here actually eaten Nutria? I’ve shot a few, but have no desire to eat one. And don’t say it tastes like chicken...I call BS on that...

I’ve never tried it. I heard they actually put limits on them in Louisiana and supposedly they are good.
Edit- no I actually saw it on t.v. Some kind of Gamo infomercial style hunting show, they said the limit was 8.

They are a non native nuisance animal that causes a lot of destruction to the levee system. The state recently update the bounty from $5 to $6 dollars. I've never eaten one but I hear they are pretty good. They are vegetarians so their meat said to be clean and sweet tasting.

Would have to be extremely hungry (maybe starving) to eat one of those nasty pests. I prefer possum.

I'm from S. La and recall years back, NOLA/Jefferson Parish was trying to come up with a way to control their nutria problem with them digging in canals/levee's. First they tried Animal Control and the like shooting them. That didn't last long... Then they tried snares that would drown them... that had a little longer life but not much. Then they employed John Folse (famous K-Paul's Chef) to come up with a bunch of recipes, featured them on his shows, etc. hoping to drum up interest in them to be an in-demand meat.
At the end of the day.. a nutria is just a big f'in rat. It even does Beavers a dis-service to call them similar.

Been watching Tonite Show reruns (best of). The blonde lady from the zoo is on there a lot. She brought a nutria recently and called it a beaver. She said the nutria’s round tail was pretty much the only difference.
Don’t folks eat the flat tailed version of the nutria? (Had to edit that question)

The nutria, Myocastor coypus, is a large semi-aquatic rodent. The generic name is derived from two Greek words (mys, for mouse, and kastor, for beaver) that translate as mouse beaver. ... Nutria are smaller than a beaver but larger than a muskrat; unlike beavers or muskrats, however, it has a round, slightly haired tail. Rodent=Rat Charlie

I have a good friend who lives on the San Saba River west of Menard and he absolutely loves nutria. He's a retired veterinarian and a pretty fair cook. I have not tried it as they look a little too much like a big rat to me...but then so does a squirrel and they're pretty tasty. Adios, Gary

I wouldn't go out of my way to kill, clean, and cook a nutria. On the other hand, if someone else did the work I'd be willing to try it.

As a kid I remember seeing the “giant vietnam rat “ show at the carnival that arrived at our local mall parking lot in the 70s

Never say never, you may be happy to put one on the table, or just about anything in the future. The depression era generation would have. jmo.

So being a rat, does that make him a water squirrel?

If you shoot one, pick it up. My impression of one was it was mostly just a bag of guts.

I haven't had Nutria, but I grew up eating capybaras, agoutis and pacas in South America, which are all rodents and close relatives. Pacas are amazing, better than any venison or rabbit, and the others aren't too far behind. Big capybara males routinely weigh more than 100 lbs, and it's great meat, so yeah, I think I'd give Nutria a try using some of those family agouti and paca recipes. I'd want to shoot them myself, though. They look like they carry more meat on them than a squirrel!

We used to kill nutria and beavers at a private fishing and hunting club my aunt and uncle ran. We could load up a flat bottom boat. We'd take them to a elderly lady from Mississippi that grew up very poor and she would make soups and stews with the nutria rat. I couldn't bring myself to eat any of it but my cousin would try just about anything once. ( they're from Hawkins TX everyone is a little off there) J/K
He said it was pretty good.
She'd sale the beaver pelts for a few dollars, she asked us one time why we didn't get the money from those beavers. We didn't care about the money we were stupid kids just having fun, later my cousin was a pallbearer at her funeral. Her grandson told us her best times were Sunday mornings after church watching us "throw all that money on her porch".

I've eaten Nutria in Louisiana three times and they're fine eating. One was cooked in a crockpot, one was fried and the other was on the grill, all were excellent. They are not a rat and strictly vegetarian, in fact they only eat the stems and lower parts of a plant including the tubers which have a higher protein count than the leaves. I find them to be much better than rabbit or squirrel. If we had them out here I'd have a freezer full of them.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.
