Here's a bit of info I found on the TPW website. Looks like they may be almost doubling the amount of counties under restriction. I think it's GREAT! They are finally adding "my" county! Limestone
Expansion of Antler Restriction Regulations
One key proposed change involves further expansion of the department’s successful antler restriction regulations into 52 additional counties where biologists have identified a need to provide greater protection of younger buck deer. In these counties, data indicates more than 55 percent of the harvested bucks are two-and-a-half years of age or younger, which creates an imbalance in the deer herd age structure.
According to Clayton Wolf, TPWD big game program director, the antler restrictions have improved age structure while maintaining ample hunting opportunity, based on data to date in the 61 counties where the rule is currently in effect.
Proposed affected counties include: Anderson, Angelina, Archer, Atascosa, Brazos, Brown, Chambers, Clay, Cooke, Denton, Ellis, Falls, Freestone, Grayson, Grimes, Hardin, Harris, Henderson, Hill, Hood, Hunt, Jack, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Kaufman, Liberty, Limestone, Madison, McLennan, Milam, Mills, Montague, Montgomery, Navarro, Newton, Orange, Palo Pinto, Parker, Polk, Robertson, San Jacinto, Smith, Stephens, Tarrant, Trinity, Tyler, Van Zandt, Walker, Wichita, Wise, and Young.

It will take about one or two seasons for it to sink in!
A few folks ignored it when they first started it in my county, but several started to get burned and the word got around.
That is the purpose of the antler restrictions and those who don't like it are the one's waging war on opening day, and the others are usually the ones that have been practicing management before the restrictions, so I see their side, but lets stop the bleeding first then worry about the scar later!

I think it stinks
I'm right there with ya! If folks want an antler restriction, they can self impose it. Oh well, I won't get started.

I have had it self-imposed for 24 years but, with family hunting on the place, it is kind of hard to punish anyone who breaks the rules. Feelings get hurt, things are said and fights break out. NOW, the game warden is on my side in this matter. They break the rules....their arses!!

Hate ar rules and regs! 3yrs in hopkins co. and it ruined the hunting at my place. See fewer deer now than i did before ar and less bucks.

I have hunted Dewit county last five years along with Corryell county. Total of ten hunters three spikes shot and a lot of big bucks that were inside there ears passed because of stupid AR restrictions. A lot of them no longer around done in on the road by cars and trucks just to lay wasting on the side of the road. I don't believe it works. Maybe somebody should put AR on car and trucks. Face if the gene pool does not support 13" bucks its never going to happen. My point is say one does make it to the so called 13" trophy level and walks on our place. He will never breed again because of a hunter who has gone 5 years without being able to shoot a mature basket rack aint going to let him make it to the next hunter who is in the same boat.

I think it's easier and better to judge a buck's maturity by looking at his body size and shape than trying to decide if it's antler width is 13" or wider.

Most people can't, though, so therein lies the problem. Most people can more accurately gauge an animal's spread better than they can age that same deer on the hoof and, since bucks with larger/wider racks are GENERALLY older, this is the best method we have right now.
It ain't perfect but I have no doubts in its ability to work. I have seen it first hand.

1- Same argument/opposition where the AR was first introduced, now they have good numbers of 13+" bucks 2- Only protected bucks get hit by vehicles? Strange... 3- If you can count on seeing every buck over 13" spread, you must hunt in a pen...they often get that big by NOT being seen, not by being protected.
Is AR a perfect solution..absolutely not. But it provides the means to turn around an area that has slipped in quality and often quantity. The option to take spikes/unforked bucks can keep the meat in the freezer. If I paid big $$ I would likely be grumbling, due to the reduced chances, but TX P&W is not expanding it cause it doesn't work, or to just pi*s you off. I doubt there is any area of TX not capable of 13" spread deer, given the chance to mature (and yes, I have seen narrow rack deer..refer to "not a perfect solution" comment).

Hummm that's weird because I've seen this posted before but TPW has 09-10 seasons posted and for Stephens Co. it says nothing about AR's....

I've seen this complaint before and I'm still wondering how Antler restrictions can cause you to see fewer deer?
If that's the case, then AR's aren't your problem, believe me!

I see alot of Tall/Narrow young bucks on my camera. Spreading the genes of non-legal bucks. Only buck killed on the place last year was a 3-1/2 yr old eight that went 15 inches. I guess the AR DID do what it was supposed to do huh?

Key words you used there, "young bucks" and evidently it is working since you killed a mature buck.

I think it's stupid. If my kid wants to shoot a whitetail that has a 5 inch spread then he should be able to, if you cant' tell a kid he can shoot the first deer that he wants to then he's gonna get bored and not want to come back. Try teaching a 5 year old the idea of growing bigger bucks, goodluck. All that is important to him is going and all that is important to me is letting him do it.

Not to argue, but what's wrong with teaching a young hunter how to hunt, and follow the rules and laws like everyone has to as an adult?
He will get more excitement, and so will you for his first deer being taken, and actually having to wait and make sure it's legal, than shooting first and looking later.
I don't see how he will be bored if he has animals to watch, and with your help, you can teach him what to look for, and why he can't shoot the first deer he sees, and explain why.
If he doesn't have the patience to sit and watch, then maybe he isn't old enough yet to take up the sport, and needs a couple more years.
That's all part of what it is to hunt, and the kill is just the icing on the cake!

3-1/2 isn't mature....if you consider 3 yr old deer mature, you dont need the AR's
