Say [censored] hits the fan tomarrow, and you are a hunter that hunts for survival, what is the one caliber you would want to use to put meat on the table?
Not trying to start a "Whats the best cal" debate, just curious what everyones opinions are.

good question. i would say .223 because i have the most ammo in this caliber, also the most guns chambered for that round. it would be a fair compromise for big game vs. small game. ammo should be fairly easy to come across.just a thought. would be hard not to have a 12guage also.

Well, let's say you had a lifetime of ammo stockpiled in advance, so comming across whatever ammo would not be a problem. All your super mags, wildcats, ultra mags, ect.

22, no doubt. They say more deer have been killed with a 30-30. Thats legal deer. 22's got the most after the season. Not that I would ever have taken a deer with one!

.308 if I'm in any kind of open land, 12 gauge otherwise.
She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

Heard that all my life, yet I've seen no evidence to support it. OH and I'd go with the 22 lr also.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

30-30 without a doubt. My second choice .22. I feed indian corn, the deer really like it and seem to stay at the feeder longer.

Would have to be a 12 ga.

This little H&R single shot rifle that I got Emily a while back would be great to have. Powerfull enough to kill a deer and ge a good def weapon as well. Easy to carry, small ammo so I can put a lot of bullets in my pockets if I need to, and the barrels are interchangable and I have a 7mm-08, .270, and a 12 gauge barrels for it.

If I needed one caliber to "survive", it would be between the 22lr and 12 gauge shotgun. You can kill anything in Texas with either of the two calibers; rabbits, squirrels, birds, hogs, AND deer (at very close ranges).

I starting thinking rifle calibers...like .308/ 3006 but then saw someone mention .12 ga because of all the options you have with that. Sure you have to get closer but thats why you have hunting skills.. Not just shooting skills. Might be hard to a lot of the texas hunters who usually hunt out of a blind with a feeder. I grew up doing the spot and stalk think for all kinds of different critters in the woods of Minnesota.

I chose 12 ga cause there are a lot more squirrels, rabits, birds, coons, etc than deer. And they are a lot easier to get close to. We're talking survival here; not sporting hunting.
I'd eat Bluejays and Sparrows before I starved. Wouldn't want to shoot either with a 30-06.
