Those are called wolf worms. They are bot fly larvae and live under the skin. We normally see them on rabbits in the Winter months. The "only eat rabbits in months with an R in them" is an old wives tale, at least down here. I've never seen any worms on or in rabbits in the summer months.

The rabbit was dead with no wound or open sores. Still limber, with the alien apparently trying to get into the body by way of the throat under the chin.
Have no idea what killed the rabbit. Never saw any wolves that big, nor on the outside.

Probably scared him to death. That thing is UGLY!

Deer and livestock get them too. After you kill a deer or a rabbit that is infected, they will start crawling out as the body cools. Nasty suckers.
