Those are called wolf worms. They are bot fly larvae and live under the skin. We normally see them on rabbits in the Winter months. The "only eat rabbits in months with an R in them" is an old wives tale, at least down here. I've never seen any worms on or in rabbits in the summer months.

Deer and livestock get them too. After you kill a deer or a rabbit that is infected, they will start crawling out as the body cools. Nasty suckers.

It died a fiery death. Strangest thing I've seen in a while .
Half grown cottontail dead on the edge of the drive way, no idea what killed it .
