Many years ago, my Grandfather taught me the craft of finishing, polishing and seasoning cast iron cookware. This is a relatively new Lodge 10 inch skillet that I worked on today.

It looks primo for a new skillet. It don't look like that when it comes from the foundry. That's a coupla' hours of work.

Cast, it didn't occur to me until this morning I might not have answered your question completely. As I said, yes sir, I use lard. But that finish is baked on at 500*, +/- 20*. That's several applications across about an hour or so. That ain't somethin' you wanna do in the house. Not only will it smoke up the house and set off the smoke alarms, it will stink up everything that's made of or covered in cloth.
