Unemployed in Texas? The state will soon try (again) to bring back the 'work search requirement'
Quote
Starting Nov. 1, the Texas Workforce Commission will require people on unemployment to look for work. The last time they tried that, a COVID surge upended the plan.

As they should. At least make an effort to look for a job.

Well articulated.

There should be a work search requirement for welfare recipients as well.

That’s strange, there has always been a work search requirement. The state can request your work search log at any time for a random audit. I’ve never heard of that requirement stopping. When you request an unemployment payment every two weeks, you have to enter the number of potential job contacts you made for each week in order to proceed to payment. I search for work every.....single......day.

They suspended it when the unemployment rate hit the teens in March. I am currently on unemployment and check job postings weekly. I have not seen a suitable job posted on the state website for almost 2 months. If you are an hourly worker there are plenty of postings but for a finance professional that was earning 6 figures pickings are slim. I guess I will just start sending out resumes for jobs I am over qualified for.

I feel you. I have been on unemployment since getting canned in June. There are tons of piss poor paying hourly jobs out there, but can't pay the mortgage with that. I am an Oil & Gas Construction & Commissioning Management/Start-Up Professional with a broader than average range of qualifications and skills, who has been making 6 figures for a long time. Not bragging, just facts. I have swallowed pride and BEEN sending out resumes for jobs that I am overqualified for, but with the candidate pool as high as it is right now it's not surprising I've had so few bites. It's getting pretty scary around here. I hope you find something soon.

I am probably better off then most. I can start collecting SS and retire in January. Not quite the retirement money wise I envisioned pre Covid. Retiring 2 years earlier then planned will cost me $100k. I have been cutting my fixed costs and have both kids off the payroll. I can pay off the house but trying to decide if I want to take the money out of investments. Boat is paid for and truck loan is zero interest and almost paid off. Regular unemployment expires next month but since job loss was Covid related I should go on extended. It kind of sucks that they just don't confirm that it will be extended. I will work at the right job but not real hopeful.

Yep, there’s been plenty of job openings for jobs in certain sectors, but a lot of people lost really good corporate jobs that haven’t come back yet, and the state job site is a joke. I’m sure it works great for janitors (absolutely nothing wrong with being a janitor) but it’s not for everyone. I agree, people should be required to look for jobs while on unemployment, but this is a completely different animal than normal unemployment, and the types of jobs being searched for vs the types of jobs on the state job site are vastly different. I’m not convinced the state job site was ever meant for people making six figures in finance, or people working account management. Hourly wages? Yes, probably great for that.

Stump, if you start sending our resumes online, send me a PM. It’s even worse than I imagined dealing with ATS.

Tired of job hunting every day. I'm about ready to say screw it, let the house and everything go.

Thinking about shutting everything off, moving to the ranch and living off the land for a while.

Man I tried. I plowed mules, plowed some heifers and pigs too. Angled that plow as deep as I could, and dang near snapped it off trying to plant a good harvest for the future. Never worked though. Even though everything looked great, there was always a storm that would roll in and wash away all that hard work. I reckon that's just the way it goes, and I'm OK with that now.

Same here in East Texas laid off in June and my company announced that they were handing out severance notices last week. They are keeping 50 in my department and I'm lucky I'm in the top 5 in seniority and get to keep my benefits for now. Praying Trump gets reelected and the oil and gas comes back and maybe we can start back up. Old job had great benefits and a pension. Don't know if I can do shift work anymore. I have worked straight days so long it's gonna be a big adjustment I can't sleep during the day and have tried dark room curtains and even sleeping pills and no luck so I'm dreading a shift work job that pays what you were making 20 years ago per hour.

I was layed off in May, took the unemployment for six weeks, I was lucky enought to be able to get my social security so that curbed the gap of no pay checks. I applied and took a part time job at Cabelas. Not going to get rich by any stretch but sitting at the house was not working. I have to pay off some stuff but going from a large pay check to one that's half or less is tuff but we will get by making minimum payments. That's just me, not judging anyone, I didn't have to job search when I took the unemployment and being a lazy lard butt I knew I needed to do something. By the way, no severance after 23 years with the company, that sucked but life goes on.

23 years here also. I had to sign a release to collect severance and pay for Cobra. Since I was in charge of the logistics budget with 140 people I knew how my package compared to others. SS limits pay to $18.5 if under full retirement age so it would do me no good the file in 2020. I am thinking some sort of part time job is in my future. Lowes or Depot might be good fits with my flooring experience. I could lay tile but that is for young men. I will work full time but no more long commutes.

Looks like the requirements kick in 11/1

It looks like states are implementing work search requirements at different times and some are providing waivers.
