Thinking back over the decades about deer I’ve tracked long distances, there really aren’t that many. Seems like they go about 50 yards max, with a rare one going 100 yards or so. If the deer doesn’t show up dead in 100 yards or so, I’m of the opinion that shot placement was poor, and you might not find that deer.

I just shoot em in the lungs. They don’t go far. . .

Pretty much my experiences ^ ^ ^
The few deer I've had to look for crashed through
brush like ol' Taz in the cartoons.
I've always been told about " the path of least resistance "
and heading straight for the nearest water, but that's never
what I've experienced.
I try to stay still and quiet after the arrow or the shot so I can
listen and get some idea of what's going on. I don't do any victory
dance or rebel yells either. No need to give the deer any
adrenaline shot after the fact to help it get away.
As some posted ^ ^ ^ already, they leave SOME kind of sign.
We just have to be patient and smart enough to find it

Agree with a lot of what has been said, the one thing I have seen deer go to water is of the gut was hit. Dark red blood and not that much can also be a liver shot that is fatal just not as fast as a good double lung or heart shot. I do not see red that great but taking my time I can usually find the deer, but for the last 8 years I mainly just trust my dog, his nose is better than my eyes have ever been at following the trail.

A quartering shot on a deer if hit too far forward or rearward, or from above too low will get one lung and a shot to one lung can make for a long trail. I have seen one lung shot animals go close to half a mile.
