It was a real surprise to me this year, when I bought my new license and was told that the state no longer has pamphlets printed up with regulations. For guys that are computer savvy and online regularly this would not be a problem, but how about all the old guys that don't even have an idea how to operate a computer? I had an old friend call me yesterday trying to confirm when deer season opened and if he could take a doe and lots of questions like that. He was under the impression that he could muzzleload near the end of October and stuff like that. He has no idea how to operate a computer and I'm sure there are probably a lot of others out there in the same situation. I'm wondering how many of these old guys will be ticketed for things they don't understand about the season's particulars this year. I have perused the computer stuff myself, and it's not easy for a guy to figure out even if they are computer literate. I hate to say it, but the state has really not treated hunters as they should this year, but trying to simplify things like this from their end.

I understand what you're saying but usually people will search until they find the information they're looking for like you're friend calling you. There are numerous ways to get the season/restriction/regulation ect information. If you're not computer or tech literate you can pick up the phone and call the Game Warden as well. I hate they stopped printing the pamphlets, who didn't 1 or 2 laying around deer camp. Always enjoyed reading and going through them every year. I also wonder like you what impact it will have on citations or warnings written this year especially with out of state hunters not being able to grab one when they buy their licenses. But as with most things when they change...they don't ever go back so my guess is they're gone for good.

One idea, go to your local TPWD and have them print off the seasons regulations that you need to know about.

You can simply Google "TPWD hunting" and one of the search suggestions is "Seasons by County" Select your county and it's pretty much just drop down menus after that.

All good, unless you're out of cell range. How do you install it in a non coverage area? Does it even work in a dead zone?

According to information at the link shared earlier, you can "easily access regulations on your iPhone, iPad or Android, even without internet service." The app evidently works from a downloaded file because I was able to access all hunting-related information after setting my phone to Airplane mode (which disables the cell radio) and turning off WiFi.

I love the word easily !!!!
Old Stony is correct!!!! I am 72 and was involved administratively with the advent of the net and computer systems how ever I Phones and apps may be GREEK to someone my age who was a tradesmen in the field or in the shop and did not have a need for system interface. Young folks are unbelievable relative to awareness and navigational skills and are in most situations ahead of the curve on this change. My wife and I could be the grand parents in the commercial where grandma gives the kids her devices and says non of these work. As a hunter ED instructor I was shocked when I was told no booklets. I do have an I Phone and I have the TPW App.
Some of our older hunters will have difficulty and I hope our game wardens have sympathetic ears for certain unique errors.

I remember the time many years ago when PC's were first being used (Yes, I'm that old) and I was installing one on the desk of a couple of guys who had been with the company for decades. I could tell the first one had no intention of using it so I tried to encourage him by saying it would make it easier for him to communicate with people. He quickly replied back, "If someone needs to talk with me they can call me on the phone."
A few minutes later I was in the office next to him installing another PC for a guy who fit the same bill. He too showed no interest in using it. I kind of jokingly told him what his office neighbor had said about people calling him on the phone. He replied, "I'll do one better. If they need to talk to me then they can come see me."
True story.

I too hope game wardens have some sympathy with the old folks trying to get their hunting regulations straight in their heads. I am 75 and can get around a computer somewhat, but a lot of the old guys just can't. I have looked around at the online stuff some, and the state sure didn't make it easy, as you have to skip around here and there to find out what you really need to know. The loss of printed regulations in my opinion is not a fair way for the state to get the info out there to everyone that needs it.

I'd rather have an official printed document then a phone app. It doesn't require batteries, won't get damaged if it gets dropped, and requires zero maintenance. I hope they bring it back next year.
PS. Yes I have the app installed. And I can use it. I still prefer the printed document. The app should always be regarded as a supplemental info source.

I Downloaded the TPWD outdoor annual app on my tablet, works just as good with no WiFi. IIRC, back in may they said they wouldn't have the printed version due to the affects Covid-19....

It made sense to me when I saw that they went digital, saved a bunch of money. But they could give you an option to have one mailed to you when you get your license, maybe charge a few dollars, sounds simple enough.

Pennsylvania tried this for a year but the overwhelming amount of negative responses caused them to return to the policy of handing them out with each license purchased.

Pretty sure there were pamphlets at the Wal-Mart when I renewed my license this year. Told the gal at the counter I didn’t need one because I had the app on my phone.

All good, unless you're out of cell range. How do you install it in a non coverage area? Does it even work in a dead zone? Yes, you download it to the phone. My cell signal runs about about 5 miles before I get to my place and I had no trouble pulling it up this weekend.

I hate to say it, but the state has really not treated hunters as they should..... Had this discussion with a couple of Game Wardens years back when I learned all of the drawn hunts I put in for that year went to out of state hunters. That year was $90 worth. Told them I would never do it again. That was 1987 & I have kept my word.
