Gonna rebarrel a stainless Ruger Hawkeye Currently chambered in a .22-250 to a 7mm-08 to have a suppressed capable rifle. Thinking of a 20” barrel and a 6” suppressor to give it a OAL of 26” to still be manageable in a blind.

Last time we looked into re-barreling anything the two big go-to’s were Hart and Schielen ( think I spelled that right ) but that was damn near 20 years ago.

Also, should I use the factory stock or change that out as well?

Any suggestions on suppressor manufacturers?

YHM Resonator it’s 6.95” but adds only 6ish” after screwed on.

YHM is awesome. First suppressor I bought was the YHM phantom QD. Only regret is I didn’t get titanium. Besides that it has been great and still my favorite and I have a couple of 30cal suppressors and I always use the YHM.

26” is way to long for a stand, 17” and add a Nomad Direct thread
Bartlein if you go short enough you can probably get away with a #3 contour but a for sure would be 3b that I would flute heavy
Brux would be another barrel choice #4 but I’m not sure on contour to get the wanted 5/8 threads

I did similar conversion on Ruger 77. I did a McGowan pre-fit and went 16.5" threaded 6.8 spc. I have a Q Trash Panda which added about 5 1/2 inches. It's basically the same length suppressed as 22" barrel.

I agree, I’d go down to 16-17” on the 7mm-08. With a 6” suppressor you’d be 21-22” barrel overall. Much better for a hunting blind and still very deadly. 308 out of a 16” AR is still supersonic at 800 yards so I imagine the 7mm-08 is as well. No need for all the extra barrel.

This is gonna be a whitetail gun to stand hunt with in the hill country and as a loaner for guests/kids.

So a 16-18” barrel is not the end of the world.


I hunt with two 26” barrel guns so that length does not bother me but i want it to be handy.

16 and titanium.......you will be pleased with the handiness and light weight of the suppressor.....

Bartlin, obermyer, Proof stainless. The shorter the better.

I try to stick with cut rifling, but the truth is they are all better than most hunting scenarios call for.

22 or so with a 6" can in a blind isn't bad imo. I guess it could be if the blind was extremely small but all that I've hunted out of it works great.

any recommendations on brand? or is titanium the brand?

Yup. All of my hunting bolt actions are 16", very handy. Cut my Bergara down but haven't hunted with it yet.

Any of the custom barrel makers make good barrels......Bartlein, Hart, Brux, Proof, Lilja, etc. I'd use the one I could find the easiest personally. They'll all shoot.

I would Not buy a K length personally as the sound suppression hasn’t been that great

I wouldn't be hung up on the length of the can. As for performance, there's no replacement for displacement. I chop everything at 16 and use 8+ inch silencers. I care much less about squeezing every fps out of the gun vs it being quiet. The Dead Air Sandman Ti is my favorite thus far.

I am in the same boat. My 7-08AI has a 20" Bartlein barrel on it with a Dead Air Sandman Ti and it handles just fine in every blind I have been in so far. My .308 is 18" and since it is a break action (TC Encore) it is even shorter with the Sandman. It is a great treestand gun.

talked to the guy who is gonna do the build today, he suggested a 20" length AND the Dead Air Sandman....taking the rig to him next week.....said the Can can take up to 14 months....

The NFA branch is running pretty quick compared to years past. 7-8 months if they stay on track.

By going with the Sandman You are going to add a brake and a keymo which will be 5-6oz of weight to the suppressor on a light hunting gun. Look at Nomad or TI for the weight savings. If you are going to war the Sandman is great but I would concentrate on weight savings and sound suppression. Sandman are awesome but not the quietest choice.
