So my wife falls a new dog a friend had dumped on them, looks like some type of lab mix. Dog has good temperament, seems to have some intellect and all is good EXCEPT.... he’s a Houdini about climbing a fence! Any ideas on what to do? We have a big yard and live in outside of town. Neighbors are all good but it’s a matter of time until he’s asleep on the road, in a pasture after chasing cows, or.... you get the picture.

We put up a hot wire on top of the 6 foot privacy fence. We always knew when the setter got out as we could hear him yelp when he hit the wire as he went over.

I went hot wire too. Only took one trip to that well and she found the boundary.
This was a battery operated unit so it was easy to install and set up.

A very hot - hot wire on top. Ground it good and oversize big time. Problem will be solved.

You can buy ones made for small animals and not as hot if a person hits it, like this one, Patriot PE2 Electric Fence Energizer, 0.10 Joule
I have had a couple I got from TSC for the very reason you need and it solves the problem, if they dig, you can run one line near the ground, just be aware if you have small kids.
Poor grounding is generally where they fail as well.

I had a brittany we nicknamed Houdini. Would take him about 1.5 seconds to scale a 6' kennel and be out. One of his puppies would walk down the top of the rail on a chain link fence, so something in the breeding. Anyway, had to have a 6' X 12' wrought iron kennel built with a 6' X 12' wrought iron roof welded on it. Only way we could keep him in. Tried it with chain link on top but he would climb up and bust the ties holding the fence and squeeze through. He even escaped a plastic portable kennel by chewing his way out (losing a tooth in the process) - see pic - obviously did not like containment.

Invisible fence. Google is loaded with them. Yes. I saw a unit that you plugged into a wall outlet and set the boundary in each direction. Didn't have to bury a wire or anything.

We have a pet safe invisible fence works like a champ. It broadcasts the circular boundary. The model we have will continue to correct until the dog returns inside the boundary unlike some other that stop after a certain distance. Best part is we take it with us when we travel. Unplug from the wall, reset boundary to an acceptable distance and go

22 shells are cheap?
Agree with hotwire as the best option if they're not going to chain him.

I didn't say that. Hell, I'd probably even watch the dog with you, if the beer wasn't some cheap swill. But we will have to to discuss better entertainment options.

Had 3 climbers/jumpers...once. Tried the hot wire and they just broke through it. Wife (#1) got rid of them when I was stationed in Korea. I got rid of her when I returned!

I. Have a kennel with a roof, however hundreds of dogs lives have been saved with. The invisible fence,, yet some of you are still fighting it.
