Hi Everybody,

I will be hunting public land (LBJ) pretty heavily this year, as I lost access to a lease. I'm in the market for a (very) portable, lightweight, ground blind. I'd prefer to stay out of the trees and I'm looking for something that I can put in or on a backpack. I'm curious to know what everyone likes to use. I'm thinking about going with the Ghost Blind, but it's just so darn expensive. Another cheaper and lighter option I'm looking at is the Ameristep Throwdown Run-n-Gun blind (or something of the sort). My concern for that route is that a deer could pick me out pretty easily....those public deer are pretty wily.

I'd love to know what has worked for you guys in the past.

The last pop up I bought and used is
an Ameristep. I think they're 60 or so retail.
It's been used for about 3 seasons or
so now. I put it up Sept of last year and
took a deer opening day last November
general season opening day and left for
the house. I had a family medical emergency
and haven't been able to return until
this last week. It's still just fine and usable
and I'll be in it next month.
The thing is to toss those little wires they
call stakes and get some long tent stakes
and have it firm to the ground. If it gets
loose or flops around it'll get tears in
the fabric and turn itself into trash.
Cows will trash one too

Here it's mostly grass land... Prefured the climbing & hanging stands,
See more from hight, OSBWMA was wooded, lots of oaks.. Could hang stand
were lots of fresh droppings, tracks, sign & such, the deer would show up @
different trees, just outa bow range... But @ least seen action... sometimes
the deer wins... If they were farther out, could move closer ..

Seen one guy hunt with the gillie suit... Not sure if LBJ is archery only or has shotgun...
Shotgun hunter orange required, Safety...
Prefure a home made ground blind for deer, they get used ta it, store bought,
suppose ta move every few days, (check rules)... Know a guy who puts a pail out
against tree along well used trail, clear shooting lane...
Just gotta find what works best for you...
On privet land, built this from pvc, it folds up, light, kinda awkward, yet portable...

Biggest thing is not moving around a lot. They see movement WAY better than any colors. All public hunting requires 400 inches of orange during gun season, and I have seen them ticket when its not on the front AND back! For cheap and easy, go to Home Depot or tractor Supply and get some of the 3/8' by 4 foot fiberglass rods for temp fencing. Super strong, light-weight, and last for years. The burlap camo netting, or a tarp about 20 feet long makes an awesome 4-sided blind. About $25-30 and very portable. Take a small folding stool or chair like you would for dove hunting, and be comfortable and not moving around. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the suggestions everybody! Luckily for the archery-only season at LBJ, hunters don't have to wear orange. So that works in my favor. I just need to figure out this blind situation and get out there! Had a doe walk 20 yards in front of me yesterday and she immediately spooked.....hence the search for a blind.

Then 2 does right under ladder stand, & look straight up @ me...

I have good luck using the natural forest vegetation hunting East Texas public land from the ground. Blown down trees, youpon clumps, and palmetto bushes all come to mind as good things to create a hiding spot.

When choosing a location I sit in as heavy shade as possible. As the shadows move during a hunt I may have to relocate a couple of feet occasionally. Except for limited motions during a move to sit in the shade sitting still is mandatory. Things like slapping mosquitoes, turning pages in a book, and texting during the hunt are not allowed.

TLoving, I like the idea of this. What about when you move to draw your bow? Does that motion not usually spook the deer?

I try to do my moving when the game is behind trees and bushes or when the deer is looking the other way. I have been busted by the deer more than once.

Even if you were using a ghost blind the deer could spot your movement when drawing the bow.

I like my Rusk Two Tall blind, You can stand up and shoot or sit and shoot. Plenty of room for 2, I wouldn't do 3 unless your 3rd was a kid. It is a bigger blind just make sure you brush it in.

I have a couple Primo Club xl. I can't find them online anymore.

I like the Ameristep Doghouse. Can squeeze two people and folding chairs. Plenty of room for one person.

I suggest the Ameristep Doghouse. Inexpensive, easy set-up, and plenty of room. They are kind of tricky to take down, and put back in the bag. There are some helpful videos on youtube, regarding this. I left one of these blinds set up for over two years, then some of the fabric fell apart. Very good product. I have tried several other ground blinds, most were more expensive, and did not work as well.
