Heading out for Elk 2nd rifle in Colorado in a few weeks. I am between the 150 grain partition or 145 grain ELD-X

Anyone prefer one over the other? thanks guys!

The 150 is respected for use on bigger game. I have used it without fault for almost 20 years in my 270 win and love it to death. I would without question pack the partition.

I used a 7 mag 160 gr Accubond on the only Elk I've shot. Would not hesitate to use the 270 wsm and 140 accubond, 150 Partition or a 140 Trophy Bonded tip. Keep shooting till he stops moving....

Heavy bonded bullet gets my vote.

Several good choices listed so far. The way my 270WSM shoots 140gr Accubonds that is what I will be using if I do another elk hunt.

I have only shot one Elk with the 270 WSM and I used the 145 gr ELDX and it dropped it in his tracks at 365 yards.
High shoulder shot clipped bottom of spine and got no exit. I did not recover bullet so not sure how much retained weight but it got the job done.

150 gr nosler for me

I just traded for a 270 shawty and have only shot one pig with it. The Accubond did real well.


I loaded some 140 SST's that I plan on using for deer and hogs, but for elk I would load an Accubond, partition, or a frame.

Love the 150 partition in my .270 win. Slightly less accurate in my rifle but on big axis they seem to work better for me than the Hornady offerings.

I'm partial to Partitions, but what does your rifle like? IMHO the 270 is the best of the WSM bunch.

Of the 2 named I would go with the partition, That bullet just works and has been since the 1940s

Uncle’s rifle had killed three with Nosler trophy grade, 150 gr.

150 partition gets my vote. Heavy for caliber and the partition may have the best reputation for on game performance of any bullet made. It may be overkill for deer. For elk, it’s as good as it gets.

I killed a water buffalo with Barnes Vortex 140 gr.
Should work on elk as well.

I've seen several people happy with the 130g Federal Trophy Bonded Tip bullets. That would be plenty of speed and energy for an elk. I just finished a ladder test and they are looking promising. Will have have 3300 fps with just over 3100 lbs of energy at the muzzle. I would stay away from the eldx on big game at these high velocities. I've seen a lot of separation issues with rounds as slow was the 6.5 creed.
