As any experienced hog hunter knows a 5.56 is all that you need for brain or spine shots, but we don't always have the opportunity to take those "ideal" shots and have to go for a lung shot from time to time. Also as we know big hogs very rarely go down quickly with a lung shot and almost always run 20 to even up to 100yds. I've shot a lot of hogs in the lungs with a 6.8, .308 and 300 HAM'R and based on "my experiences" they normally run further when shot with a 6.8 than they do with either the .308 or 300 HAM'R which seems to put them down the same. The only calibers that I've shot hogs in the lungs with that put them down really quick is the .458 SOCOM/HAM'R or a 9.3x62 with 286gr Nosler Partitions.
We have only built pistols with 11.3" bbls and mine gives 2320fps with the 130gr HotCore and still shoots sub-inch, it's my "car gun" for traveling.
We did a velocity test with the same bbl gradually cutting it from 20" down to 12.5"
BARREL LENGTH EFFECT ON VELOCITY 300 HAMR
125 SIERRA SBT PH 20" bbl 2534 FPS 125 SIERRA SBT PH 18" bbl 2498 FPS (-36) 125 SIERRA SBT PH 16.25" bbl 2486 FPS (-12) 125 SIERRA SBT PH 14.5" bbl 2441 FPS (-45) 125 SIERRA SBT PH 12.5" bbl 2367 FPS (-74) TOTAL VELOCITY LOSS FROM 20 TO 12.5 167 FPS
130 SPEER FNHC 20" bbl 2485 FPS 130 SPEER FNHC 18" bbl 2460 FPS (-25) 130 SPEER FNHC 16.25" bbl 2438 FPS (-22) 130 SPEER FNHC 14.5" bbl 2412 FPS (-26) 130 SPEER FNHC 12.5" bbl 2346 FPS (-66) TOTAL VELOCITY LOSS FROM 20 TO 12.5 139 FPS
150 SPEER FNHC 20" bbl 2202 FPS 150 SPEER FNHC 18" bbl 2194 FPS (-8) 150 SPEER FNHC 16.25" bbl 2171 FPS (-23) 150 SPEER FNHC 14.5" bbl 2146 FPS (-24) 150 SPEER FNHC 12.5" bbl 2105 FPS (-41) TOTAL VELOCITY LOSS FROM 20 TO 12.5 97 FPS
ALL TESTING WAS DONE WITH THE SAME BARREL PROGRESSIVELY SHORTENED FOR NO BARREL TO BARREL VARIATION AND ALL AMMO FOR EACH LOAD FROM THE SAME LOT. ALSO ALL SHOOTING WAS DONE DURING A 5 HOUR PERIOD ON THE SAME DAY USING A LABRADAR TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECT OF ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS. ALL CHRONOGRAPH STRINGS WERE 10 SHOTS WITH THE HIGH AND LOW SHOT REMOVED FOR AN AVERAGE OF THE REMAINING 8 SHOTS.
AS YOU CAN SEE AS THE BULLET WEIGHT WENT UP BARREL LENGTH HAD LESS EFFECT ON VELOCITY. AVERAGING THE 16.25 TO 20 NUMBERS IT WORKS OUT TO 10.5 FPS PER INCH.
Not saying i got more experience with hog hunting... Used me AR-15 223 on hog hunts... Cheap ammo, 5gr fmj & hps... Set up (AR) was close range, small caliber, (small entry& exact wound, most blood into body cavity, very little blood trail), fast action, mostly jumping up hogs... most shots heart/lung bigger target area, more room for error... All hog shot only 1 couldnt find... Shot was further out.. Close range, hogs found, very short distance traveled... shot placement & one must remember Living Target vs paper or even bolistic jell... ta spell check, D- in grammer, thar b somethings ya Don't learn in grammer school... very impressive shoot skills WC...

Just assembled my new upper with a 14.7" lightweight barrel, hoping a few extra inches will make a small difference in terminal performance vs. the 12" 6.8 and 6.5's I've always used for night hunting in the past.
I haven't read through all 45 pages of this thread, so apologies in advance. Is anyone seeing a significant difference in function between regular GI mags and 300blk specific mags? I loaded up one of my metal GI mags yesterday and seemed like they weren't laying in there just right.

DJ I like it. I read your response to my kids and they had no idea what I was talking about and why it was so funny. Good one.

You will not get reliable function unless you use Blackout mags, both Lancer and D&H function 100%. This said, we will have a new WC 30rd POLYMER mag out next week that functions 100% with 5.56, .300 Blackout and 300 HAM'R.

Bill, side question: Do you have any idea how much barrel whip there is in the 8-inch HAM'R barrel? I finally got my suppressor, which I'd planned to mount partially inside a 9.5" handguard. There is maybe a 32nd of an inch between the can and the handguard. Curious if it will hit it when firing?

Load data from "Wilson-Combat-300-HAMR-LOAD-DATA-5-20F1.pdf" mentions a bullet called "125gr Hornady FMJ", which bullet exactly is that? I found only SST and VMAX in that weight but they are not constructed as FMJs.

Thanks for the pointers. I'm going to be buying some this week. Just out of curiosity, will the WC offering be offering a significant feature that will differentiate it from the currently available options? (cost, function, etc?)

So I got my upper put together and started testing out function with 300blk Lancer mags. The rounds are the 110 Hornady soft point. My bolt is having a pretty difficult time stripping rounds out of the mag. From a locked open bolt drop the bolt will start to strip the round but won't get it all the way out. If I shove it with the forward assist it will eventually chamber.
Anyone have any thoughts or seen this issue?
Edit- I'm using a JP Silent Captured Spring assembly. I am wondering with this short stubby bullet if I just don't have enough spring to strip rounds out of the mag?

Crews. Have you tried a standard spring on it or flat wire spring. So far I have tested all 110 gr sp and the best configuration that have found is standard buffer weight and spring and Magpul 300 Blackout mags

yea, what he said ^^^ i've used those handloaded to published specs and never had a feeding problem. the blkout mags in lancer and pmag both have worked flawlessly. just have to clean the mags out from suppressor blowback on occasion.

mr wilson... how many rounds do you think it will take to shoot out a ham'r barrel? i've got to blame my missed shots on something. shouldn't these things be warrantied for at least 10,000 rounds?

So far I have tested all 110 gr sp and the best configuration that have found is standard buffer weight and spring and Magpul 300 Blackout mags I put a standard spring and buffer in there and it fed rounds just fine. I guess I'll have to call JP and see about getting a stronger spring to get consistent charging from bolt lock.
